The purpose of this paper is to explore how cognition extends to the web. Initially, Clark, a co-creator of extended cognition theory, argued against the possibility of cognition extending to the web. However, he has since revised his viewpoint. This paper delves into the consequences of Clark’s shift towards advocating for extended cognition and proposes avenues for further extension. The paper proceeds as follows. Section 2 examines an example of extended cognition made by Clark and Chalmers (1998) for the precise meaning of extended cognition and examines the parity principle that regulates extended cognition in relation to functionalism and externalism. Section 3 analyses the nature of coupling as a prerequisite for equivalence to hold and illustrates the four conditions of extended cognition with concrete examples. Section 4 examines Clark’s current position on extended cognition to the web, focusing on the web version of the parity principle, and analyzes the implications of his shift from individual to social cognition, and from the metaphysical to the methodological. The discussion reveals that Clark’s position is a progress of his earlier position and an expansion of the scope of application, and points out the need for a quantitative and methodological approach as a deficiency in current theory of extended cognition

이 논문은 인지가 웹으로 확장될 수 있는지를 확장인지 이론을 중심으로 검토한다. 이와 관련하여 확장이론의 창시자인 클락은 처음에는 인지가 웹으로 학장 불가능하다고 주장했으나 현재는 가능하다는 입장을 취하고 있다. 이 논문은 확장인지 이론을 지지하면서 클락의 입장 선회의 의미를 분석하고 확장인지 이론에서 앞으로 보완되어야 점을 제시한다. 이 논문은 다음과 같이 진행된다. 2절은 확장인지의 정확한 의미를 알기 위해 클락과 찰머스가 제시한 사례를 살펴보고, 확장인지를 규제하는 동등성 원리를 기능주의와 외재주의와 관련하여 검토한다. 3절은 동등성이 성립하기 위한 전제 조건으로서 커플링의 성격을 분석하고 인지확장의 네 가지 조건을 구체적인 예를 통해 살펴본다. 4절은 동등성 원리의 웹 버전을 중심으로 인지가 웹으로 확장 가능하다고 보는 클락의 현재 입장을 검토하고 그의 입장 선회가 갖는 의미를 개인적 인지에서 사회적 인지에로의 이행과 형이상학적 차원에서 방법론적 차원으로의 이행으로 분석한다. 이러한 논의를 통해 한편으로는 클락의 입장 선회는 보기와는 달리 초기 입장의 발전이며 이론적용 영역의 확대라는 점이 드러나고 다른 한편으로는 확장인지 이론에서 보완되어야 할 점으로 인지확장에 대한 정량적 접근과 방법론적 접근의 필요성이 지적된다.
