This study analyzes the research trends and characteristics of the quarterly journal “Unification Thought”, which was first published on August 1, 1984 by the Unification Thought Institute and published up to the 40th issue on May 25, 1997. “Unification Thought” has served as a research and educational resource for Unification Thought. In particular, “Unification Thought” published various research materials focusing on 1) theoretical reviews of the idea of victory over communism, 2) discussions of the idea of unification to overcome the division and confrontation of divided Korea, 3) discourses of religious peace and religious unification to resolve conflicts and confusion between religions, and 4) research for the Asian peace community and exchanges between scholars. “Unification Thought” introduced the words of Rev. Sun Myung Moon and Hak Ja Han Moon for World Peace, and functioned as the space for domestic and foreign scholars to discourse based on the Unfication Thought. It is time to remember and utilize the attempts of the “Unification Thought”, which has raised the discourse of peace after the post-Cold War, beyond the conflicts of the Cold War era. Unification Thought Institute should become an institution that practically explores solutions to real problems beyond global divisions and conflicts with scholars around the world based on its past activities.

본 연구는 통일사상연구원이 1984년 8월 1일 창간하여 1997년 5월 25일 제40호까 지 발행한 계간지 『통일사상』의 연구 경향과 특징을 분석하고 있다. 계간지 『통일사상』은 하나님주의 절대가치관으로 제시된 통일사상의 연구와 교육 자료로 기능해 왔다. 특히 공산주의 극복을 위한 승공사상의 이론적 검토, 분단 한국의 분열과 대립 을 넘어서기 위한 남북통일사상에 대한 논의, 종교간 갈등과 혼란을 수습하기 위한 종교평화와 종교통일 담론의 구성, 아시아평화공동체를 위한 연구와 학자 간 교류 등을 주요 주제로 다수의 자료를 게재하였다. 계간지 『통일사상』은 세계평화를 위한 문선명·한학자 총재의 말씀을 소개하며 국내외 학자들이 통일사상에 기초한 담론을 펼칠 수 있는 장으로 기능하였다. 냉전시대의 갈등을 넘어서고 탈냉전 이후 평화의 담론을 제기해 왔던 계간지 『통일사상』의 시도들을 기억하고 활용할 때다. 통일사상 연구원은 지난 활동을 바탕으로 앞으로 세계적인 분열과 대립의 양상이 격화되는 지점에서 현실문제 해결의 단초를 세계의 학자들과 실제적으로 탐구하는 기관으로 기능해야 할 것이다.
