This study aims to identify the direct effects of empathy, self-control, and self-esteem on perceptions of human rights among police officers. Specifically, this study seeks to test the mediating effects of empathy, self-control, and self-esteem in the relationships between police officers’ demographic characteristics/educational experiences related to human rights and their perceptions of human rights. Results indicate that police officers with higher levels of empathy, self-control, and self-esteem exhibit more strongly positive perceptions about human rights. The findings also show that empathy, self-control, and self-esteem mediate the effects of demographic characteristics (higher education level)/educational experiences(taking a greater number of human rights programs and evaluating the sufficiency of human rights programs more positively) on perceptions of human rights. The educational implications aimed at improving perceptions of human rights, limitations of the study, and suggestions for future research are discussed.

본 연구는 경찰관의 공감, 자기통제력, 자아존중감이 인권의식에 미치는 직접적인 영향과 이들의 인구사회학적 및 인권교육 경험 특성과 인권의식 간의 관계에서 세 요 인(공감, 자기통제력, 자아존중감)의 매개효과를 검증하였다. 분석 결과, 연구대상자의 공감능력이 높을수록, 자기통제력이 높을수록, 자아존중감이 높을수록 경찰활동과 관 련된 인권의식이 높아지는 것으로 분석되었다. 또한, 경찰관의 인구사회학적(학력)·인 권교육 경험(교육 횟수, 교육 내용 충분성 인식) 특성과 인권의식 간의 관계에서 공감, 자기통제력, 자아존중감의 부분매개효과 및 완전매개효과를 확인하였다. 경찰관의 인 권의식 증진을 위한 정책 개선 및 교육적 개입 방안에 대해 논의하였다.
