The purpose of this paper is to review the concept of systemic violence presented by Johan Galtung and Han Byung-chul from the perspective of ‘Co-livingism’ - the ideal economic theory in Unification Thought. The theory of Galtung goes beyond the traditional understanding of violence as physical aggression that results in harm. Instead, it proposes a new concept of structural violence built into unequal social structures and institutions. Han, however, disagrees with Galtung’s theory, stating that it is violence of negativity that emerges from other beings. Han argues that in our present-day performance-driven society, violence has evolved into self-exploitative violence that we inflict on ourselves to maximize our potential as a result of excessive positivity. This paper explores how Co-livingism can provide insight into overcoming such violence from the perspective of ‘freedom’ and ‘coercion’, based on an overall understanding of the opposing views of the two scholars on systemic violence. Co-livingism proposes disobedience to capitalist desires and organization of resistance efforts toward a co-living economy as a way of bringing about change.

본 논문은 통일사상의 이상 경제론인 공생주의의 관점에서 요한 갈퉁과 한병철이 제시한 시 스템의 폭력에 대해 살펴보는 데 목적을 둔다. 갈퉁은 타인에게 피해를 입히는 공격적 행위라 는 고전적 폭력 이해를 넘어 불평등한 사회구조 및 제도에서 비롯되는 구조적 폭력 개념을 새 롭게 제안하였다. 그러나 한병철은 갈퉁의 폭력 이해가 타자로부터 비롯되는 부정성의 폭력이 라고 비판하며, 성과사회의 폭력은 과잉 긍정성을 토대로 최적화된 자아를 위해 스스로에게 가 하는 자기 착취적 폭력으로 변모되었다고 주장한다. 본 논문은 시스템의 폭력에 대한 두 학자 의 상이한 견해를 종합적으로 이해하면서 공생주의는 이러한 폭력을 극복해 나가는 데 있어 어 떠한 시사점을 줄 수 있는지를 ‘자유’와 ‘강제’라는 두 측면에서 탐색하였다. 이를 통해 공생주 의는 자본주의적 욕망에 대한 불복종과 공생경제를 향한 저항적 노력의 조직화를 변화를 위한 실마리로 제시하고 있음을 주장하였다.
