This paper argues that phenomena that appear to be religious violence in modern society should be examined in the historical context in which religion and violence are connected. The specific historical context is ‘a secular age’. The secular age is characterized by the nation-state, nationalism, liberalism based on the principle of separation of church and state, and globalization driven by capitalism. The religious violence in the secular era has a completely different aspect from the religious violence in the pre-secular era, that is, the pre-modern era. Religious violence in the secular age breaks out in close connection with secular ideology.

이 논문에서는 현대 사회에서 종교 폭력으로 보이는 현상들을 종교와 폭력이 연관되는 역사 적 맥락에서 검토해야 한다고 본다. 그 구체적 역사적 맥락은 ‘세속 시대(A Secular Age)’이다. 이 세속 시대는 국민국가, 정교분리 원칙에 입각한 자유주의, 민족주의, 자본주의에 의해 추동 된 세계화 등을 그 특징으로 한다. 이러한 세속 시대의 종교 폭력은 세속 시대 이전의 시대, 즉 근대 이전의 시대의 종교 폭력과 전혀 다른 양상을 가지게 된다. 세속 시대의 종교 폭력은 세속 이데올로기와 긴밀한 연결 속에서 발생한다.
