‘The Violence of Positivity’ refers to the overall violence that occurs unintentionally in the process of doing something positively. In particular, it refers to a new pattern of violence formed by overlapping and excessing positive activities in the flow of neoliberalism, which drives people to compete freely and build their own achievements. The characteristic and problem of the violence of positivity is that the subject who creates and experiences violence, whether individual or society, does not perceive violence as violence. In a society that works normal and systematically, it is regarded as a task that comes in the process of positively acting according to the needs of the society, so even if one tries to endure it, it does not regard it as an object to be removed and overcome. Therefore, there is not much interest in the cause of difficulties for oneself. They only seek their own mental victory to overcome themselves while enduring the current situation. While praising such an attitude, society endlessly leads individuals to exploit themselves and produce extreme self-fatigue. This is a typical characteristic of the Violence of Positivity. This violence is also linked to what Johan Galtung called “Structural Violence”, and is also part of “Cultural violence” in that it voluntarily tries to internalize praise around it without knowing that it is violence. The neoliberal economic system reinforces this structure and justifies the violence of positivity while encouraging it socially, culturally and religiously. As much as it is justified, humans who are driven by positive activities are becoming more depleted. The depletion is characteristic of violence of positivity. This violence is not a concept established in existing violence studies, but since Byung-Chul Han used the word “Violence of Positivity,” awareness of this new concept has spread widely. In this paper, while summarizing the history and phenomenon of this violence, we will examine the scope and meaning of this concept of violence, and look for the possibility of going beyond “the violence of positivity” in Walter Benjamin’s “Divine Violence.”

‘긍정성의 폭력(The Violence of Positivity)’은 어떤 일을 긍정적으로 해가는 과정에 비의 도적으로 발생하는 폭력 전반을 일컫는 말이다. 특히 자유롭게 경쟁하며 성과를 쌓아가도록 추 동하는 신자유주의의 흐름 속에서, 저마다의 긍정적 활동들이 중첩되고 과잉되며 형성된 새로 운 폭력의 양상을 일컫는다. 긍정성의 폭력의 특징이자 문제는, 개인이든 사회든, 폭력을 만들고 경험하는 주체가 폭력 을 폭력으로 인식하지 못한다는 데 있다. 매우 ‘정상적으로’ 여겨지는 사회 안에서, 그 사회의 요구에 맞춰 긍정적으로 활동하는 과정에 다가오는 숙제처럼 여겨지기에, 스스로 감수는 하려 할지언정, 제거하고 극복해야 할 대상으로 간주하지는 않는다. 그렇기에 나에게 난관을 가져 오는 원인에 대해서는 큰 관심이 없다. 스스로 감내하면서 정신승리를 도모할 뿐이다. 사회는 그런 자세를 칭송하면서, 당사자로 하여금 끝없이 자기를 착취하고 극도의 자기 피로를 양산하 는 길로 내몬다. 이것이 긍정성의 폭력의 전형적인 특징이다. 이 폭력은 요한 갈퉁이 말한 ‘구조적 폭력(Structural Violence)’과 연결되기도 하고, 그것 이 폭력인 줄 모른 채, 주변에서의 칭송을 자발적으로 내면화하려 한다는 점에서는 ‘문화적 폭력 (Cultural Violence)’의 일환이기도 하다. 신자유주의 경제 체제가 이런 구조를 강화시키고, 사회적, 문화적, 종교적으로 이를 독려하면서 긍정성의 폭력을 정당화시킨다. 정당화되는 만큼 긍 정적 활동으로 내몰리는 인간은 더 고갈되어 간다. 그 고갈이 긍정성의 폭력의 특징이다. 이 폭력은 기존의 폭력 연구에서 정착된 개념은 아니지만, 한병철이 ‘긍성성의 폭력’이라는 말을 사용한 이래, 그에 대한 문제의식이 두루 확산되고 있다. 이 논문에서는 이 폭력의 현상과 유형에 대해 정리하면서, 이러한 폭력 개념의 범위와 의미에 대해 고찰하고, 발터 벤야민의 ‘신 적 폭력’에서 ‘긍정성의 폭력’을 넘어설 수 있는 가능성을 찾아보고자 한다.
