This article begins with a question about whether the study of emulation exemplars in Confucianism involves merely repeating virtuous actions or genuinely understanding and practicing them. Traditional discussions of emulation often emphasize imitating actions or identifying virtuous behavior to follow. However, this approach has limitations. For instance, even if one discerns that taking frequent naps is not virtuous, merely recognizing this does not necessarily lead to consistent practice. To address this, the author suggests that true emulation occurs when individuals deeply understand the reasons behind virtuous actions and wholeheartedly commit to practicing them. Drawing inspiration from Zhu Xi (a prominent Neo-Confucian philosopher), the author argues that emulation involves not only external imitation but also internal alignment with virtuous principles. Zhu Xi’s concept of “holding body and honoring his virtuous nature” underscores this idea. According to Zhu Xi, genuine emulation involves embodying virtuous conduct and aligning one’s inner disposition with it. The study of virtue, therefore, extends beyond mimicking actions to internalizing virtuous principles. The author also highlights cases where disciples who imitate virtuous behavior persistently and humbly. This nuanced approach recognizes that emulation encompasses both external actions and internal transformation. In summary, this study sheds light on the challenge of bridging the gap between recognizing virtue and consistently practicing it. It provides valuable insights for addressing contemporary moral education, emphasizing not only discernment but also sincere commitment to virtuous living.

이 글은 성인을 본받기 위한 모방 학습이 덕행을 반복해서 흉내 내기 만 하거나 덕행을 식별해도 따라 하지 않는 것인가에 대한 질문으로 시 작한다. 기존의 모방 학습은 모범을 본받는 도덕 공부를 할 때는 게으르 게 낮잠을 자서는 안 된다는 것을 변별해도 게으르게 낮잠 자는 재여와 같이 판별한 대로 실천하지 못하게 할 수 있다. 이러한 현실적 한계를 극복하기 위해 논자는 모방을 도덕적 습관부터 갖추어서 모범이 되는 행동을 따라 해야 하는 까닭을 마음으로부터 깨닫고 바른 판단을 절실 히 하면서 앎을 이행하려는 뜻이 확고할 때 이행한다고 본다. 밖을 제어 해서 안을 기른다는 주자에 기반해서 본 연구는 덕행을 몸으로 흉내 내 는 공부와 본보기로 마음이 동화되어서 실로 행하는 공부가 전부 성인 을 모방한 공부 효과임을 규명한다. 이러한 근거로 논자는 예에 부합하 는 행동을 흉내 낸 제자들이 멈추지 않고 겸손한 공자와 같이 성인이기 를 자처하지 않는 데까지 이른 사례를 제시한다. 이는 성인을 본받기 위 한 모방을 단계에 따라 모범이 되는 행동을 외부로부터 수용해서 따라 하는 것뿐만 아니라 모범이 되는 행동을 식별해서 마음이 실로 동화되 는 것으로도 광범위하게 규정하고자 한다. 본 연구는 성인을 본받는 차 원이 덕행을 흉내 낸 다음 덕행을 식별하는 수준을 넘어 본보기로 마음 이 동화되는 데까지 이른 것이어서 현대에 도덕 공부를 해서 도리를 식 별해도 실천하지 못하는 문제 해결의 단서임을 밝힌다.
