This paper examines how the ring, a seemingly insignificant accessory, embodies a female narrative in Korean and Chinese classical literature. Within patriarchal societies, the ring becomes more than just a thin band on a finger; it evolves into a lifelong companions for female figures during challenging times. This thread is prominent throughout the literature, where each mention of a ring carries deep cultural and aesthetic significance shaped by the distinct societal landscapes of Korea and China. It enriches literary works, serving as both a form and catalyst, illuminating the themes and nuances of female characters. At the individual level, the ring signifies a female character’s circumstances, social status, and sometimes her hidden desires. Socially, it symbolizes the unwavering mariatal commitment of couples and thea promise of reunion for those separated. Furthermore, the ring acts as an extension of the female body carrying her essence, and symbolizes the idealized roles of the “good wife and wise mother” and the virtuous woman. Thus, a ring worn by a female figure possesses profound cultural and diverse meanings, distinguishing it from mere accessories, and continues to resonate as a timeless and cyclical link associated with women to this day.

본고는 韓ㆍ中 고전문학 속에 보이는 여성 서사로서의 반지에 관하여 살펴보고 자 하였다. 여성의 손가락에 끼워진 얇고 가느다란 ‘반지’는 가부장 사회의 모진 세 월의 비바람을 견딘 여성 일생의 동반자였다. 이러한 의식은 문학의 세계에도 반 영되어 작품 속 반지는 각각 특별한 의미를 지니며, 韓ㆍ中 사회의 각각 다른 문화 적 토양 위에서 형성된 미감과 문화를 적극적으로 반영하기도 하였다. 그리고 작 품 속 반지는 작품의 주제와 여성 인물 형상을 드러내는 중요한 형식과 매개체로 예술적 깊이를 더하였다. 먼저 개인적 표식으로서의 반지는 여성의 상황과 신분을 표시, 분별(分別)하기도 하였으며, 때로는 여성 내면의 감추어진 욕망(慾望)을 드러 내는 도구가 되기도 하였다. 그리고 사회적 표식으로서의 반지는 영원히 변치 않 는 결혼의 언약, 이별하는 연인에게는 다시 돌아온다는 약속(約束)의 의미가 되었 다. 나아가 반지는 여성의 체취가 고스란히 묻은, 여체의 연장선에 있는 것으로 간 주되어 현모양처와 열녀의 분신(分身)이 되기도 하였다. 이처럼 여성의 반지에는 오랫동안 지속되어 온 인류의 심오한 가치가 담겨 있었으며, 어느 다른 장신구보 다 다양한 의미와 상징을 지니며 지금까지 여성과 끊이지 않고 순환되는 인연의 고리가 되고 있다.
