This paper, locating Haruko Ichikawa’s manga series Land of the Lustrous in the domain of post-apocalyptic literature, aims to highlight the novelty brought to the genre by the author. The post-apocalyptic genre tends to be used as a way to criticise societies ? underlining flaws and exploring potential futures. While the genre can be used to alert or raise attention onto social/environmental problematics, the focus remains the society. Parting from these canons, and drawing inspiration from the Japanese society, Ichikawa’s work offers a cathartic experience and sheds light above the question of Humanity’s nature/purpose. In a society were wellbeing and self-care are gaining in popularity, contrasting with the traditional work culture, Land of the Lustrous paves the way for the emergence of a new era within the post-apocalyptic genre: an era of the self.

이 논문은 이치카와 하루코(市川春子)의 만화 시리즈 《보석의 나라(宝石の国）》를 포스트 아포칼립스 문학의 영역으로 놓아 작가가 이 장르에 가져온 참신함을 강조하는 것을 목표로 삼는다. 포스트 아포칼립스 장르는 ‘결함’을 강조 하고 잠재적인 미래를 탐구하는 등 사회 비판적 수단으로 사용되는 경향이 있으 며, 사회와 환경 문제에 대한 경고나 관심을 이끄는데 사용되기도 하는데, 주요 초점은 사회에 맞추어져 있다. 그러나 일본 사회에서 영감을 얻은 이치카와의 작품은 이러한 규범에서 벗어나 카타르시스적인 경험을 주고 인류의 본성과 목적에 대한 질문 위에 그 빛을 비춘다. 웰빙과 자기 관리가 인기를 얻고 있는 사회에서 전통적인 업무 문화(Working Culture) 와는 대조적으로 《보석의 나라》 는 포스트 아포칼립스 장르에서 새로운 시대, 즉 자아의 시대가 도래할 수 있는 길을 열어준다.
