The purpose of this study is to investigate Choi, Yong-sin's activities as one of the representative rural enlightenment activists in the 1930s based on her photographs and image materials that have been excavated so far. Photo materials have been utilized as historical materials in the study of history since their emergence following the development of modern technologies. Being influenced by the development of digital information technologies, they were converted from analog to digital. Since the conversion, their utilization has been more active due to their easy search and utilization. However, photo materials can make consistent errors as even a single misleading judgment of their utilization has prolonged impacts. The present study thus based its analysis on the Principle of Provenance to offer information about the lineage of photo materials. The investigator analyzed Choi's activities by collecting her photographs and image materials as many as possible and analyzing them. Her life was divided and arranged into different periods of activities based on spatial restrictions in Wonsan(元山), Seoul(京城), and Saemgol(샘골, 泉谷). This process made it possible to correct the errors found in the interpretation of her photo materials and excavate her new photo materials. The facts found through the analysis of her photo materials based on the Principle of Provenance or newly proposed inferences will become a basis to advance the study of Choi's life by developing the content of the study critically.

본고는 1930년대 대표적 농촌계몽운동가 최용신에 대하여 그동안 발 굴된 사진 및 이미지자료를 중심으로 그 활동을 밝히는데 목적이 있다. 사진자료는 근대적 기술의 발달에 따라 등장한 이후 역사연구에서 사 료로 활용되었다. 이후 최신 정보기술 발달의 영향으로 사진자료가 아 날로그에서 디지털로 전환되면서, 검색·활용의 용이성 때문에 더욱 적 극적으로 활용되었다. 다만, 사진자료를 활용할 때에 한번의 잘못된 판 단은 이후에도 영향을 미쳐, 지속적인 오류를 재생산하기도 하였다. 그 래서 본고에서는 사진자료의 계통을 밝히는 출처주의에 입각하여 분석 하였다. 최용신에 대한 사진과 이미지자료를 최대한 수집하여 분석함 으로써 그녀의 활동을 복원하였다. 특히 최용신의 생애를 원산, 서울(京 城), 샘골이라는 공간적 제한 아래 활동시기로 구분하여 정리하였다. 이 과정에서 최용신 관련 사진자료에 대한 해석의 오류를 바로잡고, 새로 운 사진자료을 발굴했다. 이와 같은 출처주의에 입각한 사진자료의 분석을 통해 밝혀진 사실 혹은 새롭게 제시된 추론은, 향후 본고의 내용을 비판적으로 발전시켜 최용신의 생애에 대한 연구를 고도화할 수 있는 기반이 될 것이다.
