The purpose of this study is to analyze the developmental process of human life cycles through the protagonist, Mustard Seed’s life cycle, in the fairy tale “The Mustard Seed’s Dream” by Cho Seong-ja, with a focus on Erik Erikson’s psychosocial development theory. To achieve this, the study first explored Erikson’s theory of human development, which consists of eight psychosocial stages, including trust versus mistrust, autonomy versus shame and doubt, initiative versus guilt, industry versus inferiority, identity versus role confusion, intimacy versus isolation, generativity versus stagnation, and integrity versus despair. Next, Mustard Seed’s growth process was analyzed in light of the eight structured developmental issues in the theory. Specifically, the study discovered various themes of change and growth in Mustard Seed’s life, from being a tiny mustard seed to growing into a large tree, enduring hardships and crises. The entire life journey was analyzed, leading to the final stage of ego integration. As a result, the subject’s gradual growth was found to be difficult to explain without considering the events, circumstances, environment, relationships with others, and external factors surrounding Mustard Seed, confirming a lifelong psychosocial development. “The Mustard Seed’s Dream” portrays diverse themes such as identity, relationships, sacrifice, perseverance, hope, internalization, and existence within a community. These themes reflect the life themes that transcend generations and are demanded of humans. The themes presented in “The Mustard Seed’s Dream” are beneficial in understanding human life cycles, as they revolve around universal and common themes experienced during human developmental processes. Moreover, they contribute to establishing a healthy sense of identity as individuals and gaining insights into life from an objective perspective across all ages, fostering self-awareness and understanding.

본고는 에릭슨의 심리사회 발달단계 이론을 중심으로 조성자의 동화 ｢겨자씨의 꿈｣의 주인공 겨자씨의 생애주기를 통해 인간의 생애주기 발 달과정을 분석하는 데 목적을 두었다. 이를 위해 먼저 심리학자 에릭슨의 인간발달이론에서 심리사회 발달 8단계를 중심으로 살폈다. 에릭슨은 인 간의 심리사회발달 과정에서 나타나는 갈등 구조로써 신뢰감 대 불신감, 자율성 대 수치심, 주도성 대 죄책감, 근면성 대 열등감, 정체성 대 역할혼 란, 친밀성 대 고립감, 생산성 대 침체감, 통합성 대 절망감 등의 8단계를 제시하였다. 다음으로 겨자씨의 성장 과정을 8단계로 구조화된 발달이론 의 쟁점들에 비추어 분석하였다. 구체적으로 티끌만한 겨자씨가 새가 깃 드는 커다란 나무로 성장하는 겨자씨의 삶 속에서 고난과 위기를 통해 변화와 성장의 다양한 주제를 발견하고 마지막 8단계인 자아통합에 이르 기까지 생애 전 과정을 분석하였다. 그 결과 주체의 단계적 성장은 겨자 씨를 둘러싼 사건과 상황, 환경, 타인과의 관계, 외부요인 등을 떠나서는 설명되기 어렵고 심리사회적으로 평생 발달함을 확인하였다. 또한 􋺷겨자 씨의 꿈􋺸에서는 자아정체성, 관계, 희생, 끈기, 희망, 내면화, 공동체에서 의 존재 등 다양한 주제들이 나타나는데 이는 세대를 넘어서 인간에게 요구되는 삶의 주제들이었다. 􋺷겨자씨의 꿈􋺸에서 정리된 주제들은 인간 의 발달과정에서 경험하게 되는 일반적이고 보편적인 주제를 중심으로 인간의 생애주기를 이해하는 데 유익하다. 또한 전 연령에 걸쳐 자기인식 과 이해를 통해 주체로써의 건강한 정체성 확립과 객관적 위치에서 삶의 통찰을 얻게 한다는 점에 의의가 있다.
