In the history of Korean literature, it is difficult to define Yi Sang, a poet in the 1930s, who is following the “problematic” rhetoric, with some proposals. Discussions and research on the issues of Yi Sang’s literature have continued over the past century to the extent that the results are incalculable. Nevertheless, the evaluations of Yi Sang's literature do not seem to converge to a coherent logic. This difficulty of convergence is sometimes replaced by several rhetorical expressions such as “modern”, “abstract”, “surrealist”, “geometric”, etc. Given the topography specific to its literature, these few rhetorical expressions alone are not enough to explore its topography as a whole. Therefore this article has attempted to present more expressive expressions and propositions so that its literature can be explained in a multidimensional way. For this reason, the “modern” and “post-modern” elements inherent and external to his literature have been reviewed. As an approved opinion in the history of world literature, it has been confirmed that certain elements that affirmed the “modernity of literature” were manifested in his literary works. You could feel it was a “post-modern” attempt. Standing in a unique position as an isolated existence in “a great desert of men”, Yi Sang would have aimed for an anti-fundamental and anti-essential place, transcending the time and space in which he is included. And, no doubt, this allows the creation of a rhetorical expression of fusion or intersection or simultaneity of “modernity” and “post-modernity”.

한국문학사에서 ‘문제적인’이라는 수식어가 따라붙는 1930년대의 시인 이상을 몇몇 명제들로 정의하는 것은 어렵다. 이상 문학이 ‘문제적인’ 것에 대한 연구적 논의들은 그 결과물을 헤아릴 수도 없을 만큼 지난 세기 동안 계속되었다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 이상 문학에 대한 평가들은 일관된 논리성으로 수렴되지 않는 것 같다. 이 수렴에 대한 어려움은 때 로는 ‘현대적’, ‘추상적’, ‘초현실적’, ‘기하학적’ 등과 같은 몇몇 수사적 표현들로 대체되기도 한다. 이상 문학만의 고유한 지형을 고려한다면, 이 몇몇 수사적 표현들만으로는 그의 지형을 전체적으로 탐색하기엔 부 족하다. 때문에 본 논문은 이상 문학을 다차원적으로 해설할 수 있도록, 더 많은 수사적 표현들과 명제들을 제시하고자 하였다. 그런 이유로 그의 문학 속에 내재된 그리고 외재된 ‘현대적’이고 ‘탈현대적’인 요소들을 다 시 검토해보았다. 세계문학사에서 승인된 견해로서 ‘문학의 모더니티’를 단언해주는 몇몇 요소들이 이상 문학 속에 현현함을 확인 할 수 있었고, 다른 한편으론 현대성이 정립되기도 전에 그 현대성으로부터 일탈을 꾀 한 이상 특유의 과도함과 과격함이 ‘탈현대적인’ 시도였음을 감지할 수 있었다. “인간들의 거대한 사막”에 고립된 존재처럼 특이한 위치에 서있 는 이상은 자신이 포함된 시간성과 공간성을 초월해서 반근원적이고 반 본질적인 어떤 곳을 지향하였던 것이라고 여겨진다. 그리고 그것은, 단언 컨대, ‘현대성’과 ‘탈현대성’의 융합 혹은 교차 혹은 동시성이라는 수사적 표현의 생성을 허용해준다.
