The purpose of this study is to identify the identity of physical education. To this end, the name of sports was suspected through methodical meetings. The objects of suspicion focused on the suspicion of academic name, subject name, department name, and academic name. The results are as follows. Physical education is a generic term for physical activity seeking health and happiness. Physical education is the study of physical activity seeking health and happiness. The academic fields of physical education are humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. The purpose of physical education is well-being. Hello is physical well-being, mental well-being, social well-being, and spiritual well-being. In this context, physical education is not physical education in English, but physical activity or cheyuk. Until now, the name physical education has not met the changing times and the demands of the times. However, a realistic alternative is to choose one from physical activity or cheyuk as a dimension of inheriting and preserving historical traditions rather than a new name that can replace physical education based on historical identity.

이 연구의 목적은 체육의 정체성을 규명하는 것이다. 이를 위하여 방 법적 회의를 통하여 체육 명칭을 의심하였다. 의심의 대상은 학문 명칭, 교과목 명칭, 학과 명칭, 학회 명칭을 중심으로 하였다. 그 결과는 다음 과 같다. 체육은 안녕을 목적으로 한 건강과 행복을 추구하는 신체활동 의 총칭이다. 체육학은 안녕을 목적으로 한 건강과 행복을 추구하는 신 체활동을 연구하는 학문이다. 체육학의 학문영역은 인문학, 사회과학, 자 연과학이다. 체육의 목적은 안녕이다. 안녕은 신체적 안녕, 정신적 안녕, 사회적 안녕, 영적 안녕이다. 이러한 맥락에서 체육은 영어로 ‘physical education’이 아니라 ‘physical activity’ 또는 ‘cheyuk’에 해당한다. 지금까지 체육이라는 명칭은 시대변화와 시대 요구를 충족하지 못하였 다. 하지만 역사적 정체성에 근거하여 체육을 대체할 수 있는 새로운 명 칭보다는 역사적 전통을 계승과 보존하는 차원으로서 체육(physical activity) 또는 체육(cheyuk)에서 하나를 선택하는 것이 현실적 대안이다.
