This study aims to examine the trends in how multicultural families and their children are depicted in the South Korean media, with a focus on the related discussions. To achieve this, trends were examined through keyword selection and searches. Particularly, the study was divided into four distinct phases, with a pivotal point being the year 2006 when the policy of the Support Measures for the Social Integration of Marriage-based Immigrants and their Families was introduced. The first phase predates the formulation of multicultural-related policies and primarily addresses fundamental issues related to immigrant reception processes, methods, institutions, and the need for multicultural policies, drawing from various international cases. The second phase is characterized by recognizing multicultural families as integral members of Korean society and is marked by a significant number of articles focusing on comprehensive support for these families. The third phase represents a mature stage in which multicultural-related laws and institutions have become established in society, entering a stabilization phase. The final fourth phase delves into the experiences of exclusion and discrimination faced by multicultural families during the time when the COVID-19 pandemic was prevalent, shedding light on their struggles and the support they received.

본 연구는 국내 언론에서 다문화가정과 그 자녀가 어떻게 묘사되고 있는지에 대한 논의를 중심으로 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 키워드 선정 및 검색을 통해 관련 동향을 살펴보았다. 특히 본 연구는 4시기로 나누어 2006년 결혼이민자 가족의 사회통합 지원대책이 도입된 것을 주요 기점으로 하였다. 1기에서는 다문화 관련 정책 수립보다 우선적으로 다양한 국가의 사례를 토대로 이민자 수용 과정, 방법, 제도, 다문 화 정책의 필요성과 관련된 문제를 다루었다. 2기에서는 다문화가정을 한국 사회의 필 수적인 구성원으로 인식하고 있다는 특징을 나타냈으며 이들에 대한 포괄적인 지원에 초점을 맞추고 있다는 점을 확인할 수 있었다. 3기에는 다문화가정과 관련된 법과 제도가 사회에 정착되어 안정화 단계에 진입하는 단계로 성숙의 단계에 해당하는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 마지막 4기는 코로나19 펜데믹 시기에 다문화가정이 겪었던 배제와 차별의 경험을 조명하며 그들의 어려움과 지원에 대해 다루고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다.
