- This study conducted an empirical analysis the relationship between university dropout rates and financial stability. Using publicly available data from 170, four-year general universities spanning 16 years (from 2008 to 2023), panel analysis was conducted. To ensure the stability of the analysis, pooled OLS, fixed effects, and random effects models were employed. The findings highlighted that small private universities in non-metropolitan areas faced the highest dropout rates relative to their financial situation. As dropout rates increased, university revenue was adversely affected, potentially leading to financial crises. Government subsidies played a positive role in mitigating this impact, although their influence on faculty support remained limited. Ensuring balanced financial stability is crucial for small-sized private universities, especially considering the varying relationship between dropout rates and university finances based on size and location.

- 본 연구는 대학 중도탈락률과 대학 재정 간의 관계를 실증분석하였다. 연구를 위해 2008년부터 2023년까 지 16년간 170개 4년제 일반 대학의 공시 자료를 바탕으로 패널분석하였으며, 분석의 안정성을 확보하기 위해 pooled OLS, 고정효과, 확률효과 모형을 사용하였다. 분석 결과, 가장 높은 중도탈락률과 수입에 비해 지출 불균형 을 보인 곳은 비수도권에 위치한 중소형 사립대학이다. 또한, 중도탈락률의 증가는 대학 수입에 부정적인 영향을 미치며, 재정적 위기를 초래할 수 있는 중요한 요인으로 나타났다. 이와 달리 국고보조금은 중도탈락률 증가에 따 른 재정적 영향을 완화하는데 긍정적인 역할로 나타났다. 국고보조금의 매개효과 분석 결과, 국고보조금이 중도탈 락률 증가에도 불구하고 대학은 학생 지원 지출에 적극적인 영향을 미쳤다. 하지만 교수 지원에는 국고보조금의 영 향력이 미미하며, 이는 학생 이탈을 방지하기 위해 학생 지원은 증가했지만, 교수 연구 투자에는 제한적이었으며, 이로 인해 교육 서비스의 질 하락과 대학 재정의 심각한 불균형이 발생할 수 있음을 시사한다. 이 연구 결과를 바 탕으로 비수도권 중소형 규모의 사립대학은 균형잡힌 재정 안정성을 달성하기 위한 전략을 모색하는 것이 중요하 며, 대학 규모와 위치에 따라 중도탈락률과 대학 재정의 관계가 다르기 때문에, 이를 고려한 정책 수립이 필요하다.

INCA was registered as an incorporated association under the Ministry of Information and Communications. The main purpose of the organization is to improve our society by achieving the highest capability possible in next generation convergence technology.
