If we examine recent non-creative activities among poets, we observe their active participation in literary events such as readings and book talks following the publication of their works. These events are primarily organized by publishers to promote their books, bookstores, and libraries, typically featuring poets reading their own works. With the recent expansion of the audio content market, including audiobooks and podcasts, and the increasing popularity of reading performances, poetry is evolving into a genre delivered directly to the audience through voice. Consequently, it is imperative to conduct research in line with these changes. Furthermore, poetry reading has been acknowledged as a supplementary activity to the creation and publication of literary works, necessitating research on its artistic value. This study explores the perception of the artistic value of poetry reading, considering the recent surge in poets’ reading activities. To achieve this, we initially analyzed the total number of poetry collections released by major literary publishing houses in Korea over the past three years, along with the frequency of poetry reading performances. Additionally, we conducted a perception survey among creators and readers in the literary community to gauge their views on the artistic value of poets’ reading performances, their opinions on formal recognition of artistic endeavors, the societal impact of poetry readings, and the demand for literary spoken word content. Initially, we examined the total number of poetry collections published by major literary publishing houses in Korea over the past three years, and whether they hosted poetry readings. This allowed us to assess the level of engagement in poetry readings organized by publishers and the current landscape of each publisher, affirming the recent vibrancy of such events. Subsequently, we conducted a perception survey among creators and readers in the literary community to ascertain their recognition of the artistic value and social impact of poetry readings. Our findings indicate that the majority of respondents view poetry reading as a form of artistic expression by poets and recognize its role in fostering community cohesion. Moreover, we observed a transition from solitary engagement with literature to active participation in shared enjoyment of poetry readings. Furthermore, to gauge the potential for poetry reading to attain official recognition as an artistic activity, we surveyed opinions on the certification of such activities. The results suggest the need for further discourse to establish poetry reading as an officially recognized artistic pursuit. By establishing a foundation for future research on poetry reading, this study aims to stimulate discourse on various artistic aspects of poets’ reading performances, promote institutional support for poetry reading events, and enhance public interest in poetry reading to rejuvenate literary culture.

최근 시인의 창작 외 활동 양상을 살펴보면, 작품집을 출간한 이후 낭독회 및 책담회 등의 문학 행사에 활발히 참여하고 있다는 것을 확인할 수 있다. 이러한 행사는 주로 출판사 주관의 출판물 홍보 성격 또는 서점 및 도서관 등의 공간 홍보 목적으로, 대부분 행사 내용에 시인의 시 낭독 활동을 포함한다는 특징이 있다. 최근 오디오북, 팟캐스트 등 음성 콘텐츠 시장의 확장과 낭독 공연의 활성화로 인해 시는 음성의 형태로 독자에게 직접 전달되는 장르로 변화하고 있으므로, 이에 따른 연구가 필요할 것으로 보인다. 또한 시 낭독은 문학작품을 창작하고 발표하는 활동에 잇따르는 부가적인 활동으로 인식되어 왔기에 예술적 가치의 범주와 관련한 연구가 필요하다. 본 연구는 최근 증가하는 시인의 시 낭독 활동에 기반하여 시 낭독이 지닌 예술적 가치의 인식에 대해 고찰하였다. 이를 위해 최근 3년간 국내 주요 문학 전문 출판사에서 발행된 시집 총서와 시 낭독 공연의 빈도를 조사하였으며, 문학 분야 창작자 및 독자를 대상으로 인식 조사를 실시하여 시인의 시 낭독의 예술적 가치와 공식적 예술 활동의 증명에 대한 인식도, 시 낭독이 지니는 사회적 효과, 문학 음성 콘텐츠 수요 등을 파악하였다. 먼저, 국내 주요 문학 전문 출판사에서 최근 3년간 발행된 시집 총서와 시 낭독 공연 개최 여부를 조사하였다. 조사 결과, 최근 출판사 주관 시 낭독 공연의 활성화 정도 및 출판사별 현황을 살펴볼 수 있었으며, 이를 통해 최근 출판사가 주최하는 시인의 시 낭독 공연이 활성화되어 있다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 다음으로, 문학 분야 창작자 및 독자를 대상으로 인식 조사를 실시하여 시 낭독에 대한 예술적 가치와 사회적 효과에 대한 인식 정도를 파악할 수 있었다. 이 과정에서 창작자 및 독자의 대다수가 시 낭독을 시인의 예술 활동으로 여기며 공동체 연대가 강화된다는 유의미한 결과를 확인하였다. 또한 문학독자에서 시 낭독 청자로의 전환에 따라 개인적인 행위로만 인식되었던 문학 독서 및 감상이 타인과 함께 즐기는 능동적인 향유 활동으로 확장되고 있다는 점을 알 수 있었다. 아울러, 시 낭독의 공식적 예술 활동으로의 발전 가능성을 파악하기 위해 공식적 예술 활동의 증명에 대한 의견 또한 확인할 수 있었다. 이를 통해 공식적인 예술 활동으로 인정받기 위해 보다 많은 담론이 생성되어야 할 것으로 파악할 수 있었다. 본 연구는 향후 시 낭독과 관련한 연구의 토대가 됨으로써, 이를 시작으로 시인의 시 낭독에 대한 다양한 예술적 담론이 생성되고, 낭독 공연에 대한 제도적 지원과 대중의 관심이 제고되어 낭독 문화가 활성화되기를 기대한다.
