This paper started from the question of why, among Baek Seok’s works which continued to work in North Korea until 1962, the poetry of this period was excluded or avoided from South Korean research. By investigating the poems of this period, which were neglected from the study of literary history, it was considered that it would be possible to compensate for deficiencies in literary history and at the same time provide a foundation for correcting the imbalance in Baek Seok’s research. First, this researcher believed that North Korean literature could not be understood separately from the process of establishing the social system of North Korea. In the mid-to-late 1950s, North Korea was urgently transformed into a party -led socialist system along with the post-war economic recovery project. As the state dominated and interfered in all areas of society, the autonomy of literature and art and freedom of expression were severely reduced. It was around that time that creation forced by others became widely common in North Korean literature. During the turbulent period of regime change, Baek Seok shortly served as an editorial member of the , which was founded in December 1956, as serving a member of foreign literature subcommittee and children’s literature subcommittee of the Joseon Writers Union. This paper attempted to grasp the essence of Baek Seok’s literary theory in North Korea by analyzing all of Baek Seok’s writings and activities in . At the same time, the process of ‘the argument of pre-school-age children’s literature’, which ended with Baek Seok’s self-criticism, was analyzed. This argument was summarized as Baek Seok, who has the aspect of a literarist, being lost by indiscriminate attacks by dogmatic writers who advocated ‘party-oriented literature’. Baek Seok published 18 poems after being expelled to the cooperative farm in Samsu-gun, Yanggang-do in January 1959 under the name of ‘the local dispatch of writers’. In this paper, the characteristics of these works were analyzed by dividing them into two categories. The poems of the technique which expanded the narrative by appearing specific people in the poem were adding a sense of reality by using specific plant names. On the other hand, poems that excessively use interjection ended up being ideological poems of blind praise and the excessive angry. Baek Seok published 18 poems just at the time when Kim Ilsung’s one-man rule was laid during the process of North Korea’s power struggle. The reason why these poems show ambivalent characteristics is that Baek Seok’s poem could not find a complete settlement in the boundary between ideology and art, the boundary between other will and will, and the boundary between duty and romance. In the future, more research should be conducted to evaluate Baek Seok’s poems in the 1950s and 1960s, which were neglected from South Korean literature studies.

이 논문은 해방 후 북한에서 1962년까지 작품활동을 지속한 백석의 작품 중에 왜 이 시기의 시가 남한의 연구에서 배제되거나 기피의 대상이 되었을까 하는 의문에서 출발하였다. 문학사 연구에서 소외된 이 시기의 시들을 살펴봄으로써 문학사의 결함을 보완하는 동시에 백석 연구의 불균형을 바로잡는 단초를 마련할 수 있을 것으로 보았다. 먼저 본 연구자는 북한문학이 북한 사회의 체제 성립 과정과 분리해서 파악할 수가 없다고 보았다. 1950년대 중후반의 북한은 전후 경제 복구 사업과 함께 당이 주도하는 사회주의적인 체제로의 개조가 급박하게 진행되었다. 국가가 사회의 모든 영역을 지배하고 간섭하면서 문학예술의 자율성과 표현의 자유는 심각하게 위축될 수밖에 없었다. 북한문학에서 타의에 의한 창작이 광범위하게 일반화된 것도 그 무렵이었다. 체제 변동의 격동기에 백석은 조선작가동맹의 외국문학분과위원과 아동문학분과위원으로 활동하면서 1956년 12월에 창간된 『문학신문』의 편집위원을 잠시 맡았다. 이 논문은 『문학신문』에 실린 백석의 모든 글과 활동 내용을 분석함으로써 북한에서 백석이 펼친 문학론의 요체를 파악하고자 시도하였다. 이와 함께 백석의 자아비판으로 막을 내린 ‘학령 전 아동문학 논쟁’ 과정을 분석하였다. 이 논쟁은 ‘당적인 문학’을 기치로 내거는 교조주의적인 문인들의 무차별적인 공격에 문학주의자의 면모를 지닌 백석이 예술성을 내세우다가 패배한 것으로 정리하였다. 백석은 1959년 1월 ‘작가 현지 파견’이라는 이름으로 양강도 삼수군 협동농장으로 쫓겨난 이후 18편의 시를 발표하였다. 이 논문에서는 이 작품들의 특성을 두 가지로 나누어 살펴보았다. 시에 구체적인 사람을 등장시켜 서사성을 확대하는 기법의 시들은 구체적인 식물명을 활용하여 현실의 실감을 더하는 특징을 보여주었다. 반면 감탄사와 호격조사를 지나치게 사용하는 시들은 맹목적인 찬양 및 비분강개형의 관념시에 그치고 말았다. 백석은 북한의 권력투쟁 과정에서 김일성 일인 지배 체제의 발판이 마련되는 바로 그 시점에 18편의 시를 발표했다. 이 시들이 양가적인 특성을 드러내는 것은 백석의 시가 사상과 예술의 경계에서 온전한 정착지를 찾지 못했다는 뜻이다. 이 연구를 통해 백석의 문학주의자로서의 자부심과 함께 사회주의 국가 건설에 이바지하려는 리얼리스트로서의 의무감이 공존했다는 것을 확인하였다. 백석은 사상과 예술의 경계에서 고민하던 경계인이었다. 경계인으로 살다 간 백석의 갈등과 혼란을 염두에 두면서 남한의 문학 연구에서 소외된 1950~60년대 백석의 시에 대한 평가가 이뤄져야 할 것이다.
