This study explores the modern reproduction of characters from Chinese classics, using Tian Qinxin's 2013 play as the subject of study, and analyzes changes in Chinese performing arts forms. The play is a reconstruction of the traditional Chinese folk tale The Legend of the White Snake. The purpose of this study is to find out how directors recreate traditional female characters in modern performing arts based on Chinese classics such as The Legend of the White Snake. Mainly from a feminist perspective, we attempted to approach the character form through literary analysis and actual cases of performance viewing. First, we summarized the history of the classic White Snake and changes in performance format. The image of the snake that appeared in various forms of the White Snake Legend in the past started from the negative perception that it was a ‘human-eating monster.’ However, the image of the snake reproduced in today's Chinese performing arts has changed into a rebel against such stereotypes, as seen in . is the first attempt to approach The Legend of the White Snake from a woman’s perspective. As a female director, Tian Qinxin recreated the story from a new perspective. As a result of analyzing her play focusing on female characters, three characteristics were found: the emergence of diversity, the subversiveness of the characters, and the director's ego projection. The female characters in represent traditional and anti-traditional women in China. The image of women in ancient China was mainly shown as evil that ruined men, but in modern times, women were gradually transformed into images of good that helped men. The modern re-creation of classical Chinese characters shows changes in modern Chinese performing arts. is an example that shows that traditional and modern ideas can be opposed and fused at the same time. This study sought to provide implications for the creation and development of Chinese feminist plays through the transformation of female characters in the classic Chinese folktale The Legend of the White Snake and their reproduction in modern plays.

본 연구는 2013년 톈친신(田沁鑫)의 연극 <청사(靑蛇)>를 연구 대상으로 하여 중국 고전 속 캐릭터의 현대적 재현을 탐구하고, 중국 공연예술 형식의 변화를 분석한다. 연극 <청사>는 중국 전통 민담 백사전(白蛇傳)을 재구성한 것이다. 이 연구는 백사전과 같은 중국 고전을 소재로 한 현대 공연예술에서, 연출자가 작품의 전통적 여성 캐릭터를 어떻게 재창조하는지 알아보는 것에 목적이 있다. 주로 페미니즘적인 관점에서 문헌분석과 공연 관람의 실제적 사례를 통해 인물 형태에 대한 접근을 시도하였다. 먼저 고전 백사전의 역사와 공연 형식의 변화를 정리했다. 과거 다양한 양식의 백사 전설 속에 등장하는 뱀의 이미지는 ‘사람을 잡아먹는 요괴’라는 부정적인 인식에서 출발했다. 그러나 오늘날 중국 공연예술에서 재현되는 뱀의 이미지는 <청사>에서 볼 수 있듯이 이러한 고정관념에 대항하는 반항자로 변화했음을 알 수 있다. <청사>는 백사전을 여성의 관점으로 접근한 첫 번째 시도다. 여성 연출로서 톈친신은 새로운 시각에서 이야기를 재창작했다. 연극 <청사>를 여성 캐릭터 중심으로 분석한 결과, 다양성의 대두, 인물의 전복성, 연출자의 자아투영 등 세 가지 특징을 찾아볼 수 있었다. <청사> 속 여성인물들은 중국의 전통 여성과 반전통 여성을 대표하고 있다. 중국 고대 여성의 이미지는 주로 남성을 망치는 악(惡)으로 나타나나 현대에 여성은 남성을 도와주는 선(善)의 이미지로 점차 변모하고 있는 것으로 파악했다. 중국 고전 캐릭터의 현대적인 재창조는 현대 중국 공연예술의 변화를 보여준다. <청사>는 전통사상과 현대사상이 대립과 동시에 융합할 수 있다는 것을 보여주는 사례다. 이 연구는 중국 고전 민담인 백사전 속 여성 인물의 변천과 현대연극으로의 재현 양상을 통해 중국 페미니즘 연극의 창작과 발전에 대한 시사점을 제공하고자 했다.
