This study examined the “Explanation of the Śūraṅgama Sūtra” found in the Buddha belly treasure materials from the Goryeo Dynasty’s bronze statue of Avalokiteśvara in Cheongyang Unjangam, from a bibliographical perspective. The analysis looked at the type of edition, publication period, transmission of the edition, lineage, etc., and the results are generally as follows: The three books of the Commentary that interprets the Śūrangama-sūtra, Volumes 1-8, 9-15, and 16-23, were carved by the Bureau of Sutra Printing in 1462 during the Joseon Dynasty, according to the publication record. The original text was compiled in China during the Xianhui period. Volumes 1 and 30 contain records of the publication process and history when it was included in the Dongchan Temple Tripitaka. The scroll format of the Tripitaka was changed to a book format, and the Tripitaka’s cover was also treated with ink. Overall, it is presumed to be a reprinted edition from the Bureau of Sutra Printing, not a carved edition of the Chinese Tripitaka, judging from the lettering and form of the carving. In the text, the part that starts with ‘標 …’ in the small character commentary is an abbreviation indicating the ‘Key Point Indication’ written by Monk Xiaoyue of Song Dynasty’s Letan. It records the explanation of important words in the main text, the relationship before and after the key words, the causal relationship, etc., and also includes the meaning of the sentence. Especially in the case of the Commentary that interprets the Śūrangama-sūtra, which is the subject of this study, it was not included in the Tripitaka Catalog when looking at the publication period. Among the records related to the type of edition like the Commentary that interprets the Śūrangama-sūtra, in the case of the revised edition of the Bureau of Sutra Printing in the Joseon Dynasty, there are cases where only the publication record and the writer and proofreader of Goryeo are engraved, and cases where the publication records of Goryeo and Joseon are all omitted. However, if there is a publication record, two types of publication records appear, but since the existing books have not remained in the form of full ranks, it cannot be ruled out that the form of publication records may appear differently in materials that have not been discovered so far.
