Monk portraits are paintings that contain the lives and thoughts of Buddhist practitioners on the path to enlightenment, and are also a medium for solidarity among clans. Therefore, the Tongdosa monk portraits can be said to be a great legacy that shows the long history of Tongdosa Temple and at the same time a valuable Buddhist painting. In this article, I looked at the existing state, production purpose, iconography, and painting style of Tongdosa monk portraits. Previously, several researchers had analyzed the portraits of monks at Tongdosa Temple, but the relationship between the portraits and the monk clan and the painting style were insufficient. With these points in mind, I intensively analyzed areas that had not previously been covered. As a result, it was found that the existing portraits of Tongdosa monks are composed of portraits of monks who opened and led the history of the temple and led its subsequent reconstruction and revival. And by examining the records written on the portraits and the literature handed down to the temple, it was possible to find out for what purpose monk portraits were produced at Tongdosa Temple in the late Joseon Dynasty. In addition, through the monk portraits, it was confirmed specifically that many monks of the Hwanseongdangjian Clan stayed at Tongdosa Temple in the late Joseon Dynasty and played an important role. Next, through analysis of the iconography, the origin of the iconography of the portrait of the Venerable Master Jajangyulsa was found and its meaning revealed. Lastly, through analysis of painting style, the painter and production period of some works were also specified.

불교 진영은 깨달음의 길을 간 불교 수행자들의 삶과 사상이 담긴 시각 조형물이자 문중의 결속을 위한 매개체이기도 하다. 그러므로 통도사 고승진영은 통도사의 유구한 역사와 함께 한 큰 스님들의 행적을 보여주는 위대한 유산이며 동시에 귀중한 불교회화라고 할 수 있다. 이러한 점들을 염두에 두고 이 글에서는 통도사 진영의 현황과 제작 목적, 그리고 도상 및 화풍을 살펴보았다. 통도사 진영에 관해서는 이미 여러 논고가 존재하지만, 진영과 승려 문중과의 연관성, 그리고 화풍에 관해서는 미진한 부분이 있었다. 필자는 통도사 진영의 일괄 조사를 토대로 기존에 미처 다루어지지 않은 점들을 중심으로 분석해 보았다. 그 결과, 현존하는 진영이 통도사의 역사를 열고, 이끌었으며, 이후 재건과 부흥을 도모한 스님들의 초상화로 구성되어 있음을 확인했다. 그 과정에서 동일 승려의 진영이 복수로 존재하는 사례와 그 의미도 알 수 있었다. 그리고 찬문 및 사찰의 기록을 살펴봄으로써 당시 조선후기 통도사의 선사 숭배와 진영의 제작 목적도 엿볼 수 있었다. 그뿐만 아니라 진영을 통해 조선 18세기 이후 20세기까지 통도사에서 환성당지안 문중이 크게 세거했음을 구체적으로 확인할 수 있었다. 다음으로 도상의 분석을 통해 <자장율사 진영> 도상의 연원과 그 의미를 제시했으며, 마지막으로 화풍 분석을 통해 일부 작품의 화사와 제작 시기도 구체화했다. 특히 <월허당계청 진영>과 <화곡당계천 진영>이 <해송당관준 진영>(1786년)보다 앞서 제작되었을 가능성을 제시했다.
