This study examines the translation patterns of epistemic modality in The Purloined Letter, Edgar Allan Poe's mystery novel. It analyzes how the translator's translation strategy affects the interaction between the text and the reader. Five Korean translations of The Purloined Letter were analyzed to compare the epistemic modal meaning represented/expressed in the target text (TT) with that of the source text (ST). Being "concerned with the speaker's confidence or lack of confidence in the truth of a proposition expressed"(Simpson 1993: 48), epistemic modality provides clues to the case that are as important to mystery readers as information directly related to the case, such as the motive for the crime or evidence of the crime. Depending on the degree of commitment to the truth of the information the speaker provides, the reader decides whether to trust the information conveyed and use it for their reasoning. In mystery novels, epistemic modality functions as a powerful narrative device that controls the quantity and quality of the information related to the reader, thus influencing the reasoning process. A skillful use of epistemic modal expressions stimulates the reader’s curiosity and heightens suspense. For the TT readers to have the same experience as the ST readers, the translator must consistently convey the ST’s epistemic meaning and modal value (e.g., high/medium/low) to the TT. The five Korean translations analyzed in this study showed a translation tendency in which the degree of certainty was weakened in the TT compared to the ST. The degree of certainty was weakened in the TT due to the low-value epistemic modal expressions added by the translators in the translation process. Categorical assertions are ‘epistemically non-modal’ propositions, which represent the highest degree of commitment to the truth of a proposition expressed. Instead of categorical assertions in the ST, the TT translators used low-value epistemic markers in Korean, such as ‘gess’ and ‘ji-do-mo-leun-da.’ If the speaker’s degree of certainty represented in the ST is translated differently in the TT, and if inconsistent translation of epistemic modal patterns continues throughout the TT, this may cause confusion in TT readers and can eventually change the “feel” of the text. These problems are undetectable by the TT readers, who read translated Korean versions only, but it is a measure that requires close attention from translators.

본 연구는 추리소설 『도둑맞은 편지』(The Purloined Letter)의 인식양태 번역 양상을 살펴보고 번역가의 인식양태 번역 전략이 텍스트와 독자 간 상호작용에 어떤 영향을 끼 치는지 분석한다. 원문(source text: ST)과 번역문(target text: TT) 간 인식양태 대조와 TT 간 대조 및 번역 양상 파악을 위해 『The Purloined Letter』의 한국어 번역 5종을 분석하 였다. 인식양태는 ‘명제의 사실 여부에 대한 화자의 태도’를 나타내므로 범행 동기나 범행 증거 등 사건과 직접 관련된 정보만큼이나 추리소설 독자에게 중요한 사건 단서를 제공 한다. 화자가 제공하는 정보에 대한 확신의 강도가 어느 정도이냐에 따라 독자는 전달된 정보를 신뢰할지 여부를 결정하고 이를 추리에 적용한다. 인식양태는 추리소설에서 사건 정보를 제공하는 서사 장치의 하나로 독자의 호기심과 긴장감 유지에 큰 영향을 미치 므로 ST 저자가 의도한 인식양태의 의미와 강도가 변함없이 TT에 전달되어야 TT 독자 도 ST 독자와 같은 독자 경험을 할 수 있다. 본 연구에서 분석한 TT 5종은 TT에서 ST보다 인식양태 확신 강도가 약화되는 번역 경향을 보였다. 번역가가 ST에 없는 인식양태 표현을 번역 과정에서 추가하여 TT의 확 신 강도가 약화되는 방식으로 주로 나타났다. 정언명제(categorical assertion)는 양태 표 현을 쓰지 않아 화자의 확신 강도가 가장 강하게 드러나는데, 이러한 정언명제에 확신 정 도가 약한 표현(‘-겠’, ‘-ㄴ/ㄹ 지도 모른다’ 등)을 써서 TT의 확신 강도를 약화시켰다. 번 역가의 선택으로 인해 ST의 확신 강도가 TT에서 다르게 번역되고 TT 전반에서 일관성 없는 인식양태 번역이 계속된다면 이는 TT 독자에게 혼란을 불러일으키고 결국에는 텍스트의 ‘느낌’까지도 변화시킬 수 있다. 이러한 확신 강도 약화와 일관성 없는 번역의 문제는 TT 독자가 알아챌 수 없는 문제라는 점에서 번역가의 세심한 주의가 필요하다.
