Korean police studies plays a pivotal role in interpreting and validating the changes in the Korean police force from an academic perspective and providing practical directions. However, it is not free from criticisms about its qualifications as a discipline. The purpose of this study is to verify whether police studies has secured an independent academic identity and to explore the development direction to establish the academic field of police studies. The results of the study show that police science (1) takes both the formal structure of police organizations and the actual policing environment as unique research topics, (2) functions as an applied discipline by applying research methodologies required by individual research topics, (3) has 198 police-related majors in 109 universities in Korea, (4) is continuously conducted by more than 50 professional societies, and (5) has accumulated about 375 research works per year in the top 11 indexed journals, confirming its academic identity. Criticisms of the academic nature of police science do not stem from questions about its academic identity, but from deficiencies in its academic structure. The development of Korean police science requires efforts to establish an academic framework that reflects its interdisciplinary nature, design a standardized curriculum in line with it, and establish a unique research area of police science within the academic research field classification system by gathering the interest and commitment of all police science researchers.

한국 경찰학은 한국 경찰의 변화를 학술적 관점에서 재해석하고 검증하여 실천적 방향을 제시하는 역할을 주도하고 있음에도 ‘경찰학이 학문인가’라는 비판에서 자유롭 지 못하다. 본 연구의 목적은 경찰학이 독립적인 분과 학문으로서 학문적 정체성을 갖 추었는지 검증하고, 경찰학의 학문체계를 정립하기 위한 발전 방향을 모색하는 것이다. 연구 결과, 한국 경찰학은 (1) 형식적 경찰 조직과 실질적 치안환경을 고유한 연구대상 으로 하며, (2) 개별 연구주제에서 요구하는 연구 방법을 적용하는 응용학문으로, (3) 국내 109개 대학에 198개의 경찰학 관련 학과가 개설되어, (4) 50여개 이상의 전문 학 회가 지속해서 경찰학에 대한 연구를 수행하고 있으며, (5) 주요 11개 등재학술지에서 만 연간 375편의 연구 성과를 축적하여 학문적 정체성을 갖추었음을 확인하였다. 경찰 학의 학문성에 대한 비판은 학문적 정체성에 대한 의문이 아니라 미흡한 학문체계에서 비롯된 것이다. 한국 경찰학이발전하기 위해서는 학제간 연구의 특성을 반영한 경찰학 학문체계를 정립하고, 이를 반영한 표준 교육과정을 설계하며, 학술연구분야 분류체계 에 경찰학의 고유한 연구 영역을 확립하기 위한 경찰학 연구자 모두의 관심과 노력이 필요하다.
