This study examines the relationship between ESG and non-financial performance of Korean subsidiaries of multinational companies entering the Korean market. The purpose is to explore the path between local ESG activities and non-financial performance by analyzing the mediating effect of financial performance in this process. This study attempted to examine the effects of ESG of local subsidiaries by adopting stakeholder theory, institutional duality, and surplus resource theory. As a result of analyzing 138 local subsidiaries of multinational companies operating in Korea, ESG was found to have a significant positive relationship with non-financial performance and financial performance. As a result of analyzing the mediating effect, financial performance was found to significantly mediate the relationship between local ESG and non-financial performance. This study shows that ESG activities performed by local subsidiaries of multinational companies could positively affect on non-financial performance. It also means that the process of carrying out ESG activities can have a significant impact on non-financial performance through improvement of financial performance. These results suggest that the positive function of ESG, which is to improve financial indicators in the path of solving ESG challenges and to obtain non-financial performance in this process, is a proposition that can be realized even from the perspective of local subsidiaries.

본 연구는 국내 시장에 진출한 다국적기업 현지 자회사의 ESG 경영과 비재무적 성과 간의 관계를 고찰하고, 그 과정에서 재무적 성 과의 매개 효과를 분석함으로써 현지 ESG 경영 활동과 비재무적 성과 간의 경로를 탐색하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 본 연구 는 이해관계자 이론을 비롯하여 제도적 이중성 및 잉여 자원 이론을 채택하여 현지 자회사의 ESG 경영의 구체적인 경로를 살펴보고 자 하였다. 국내에 진출한 138개 다국적기업 현지 자회사를 대상으로 분석한 결과, ESG 경영은 비재무적 성과 및 재무적 성과에 정(+)의 유의 한 관계를 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 매개 효과를 분석한 결과, 재무적 성과는 현지 ESG 경영과 비재무적 성과 간의 관계를 유의하게 매개하는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 다국적기업 현지 자회사가 수행하는 ESG 경영 활동 자체가 비재무적 성과에 긍정적인 영향을 미칠 수 있으며, ESG 활동이 수행되는 과정에서 재무적 성과의 개선을 통해 비재무적 성과에 유의한 영향을 미칠 수 있다는 것을 보 여준다. 이러한 결과는 ESG 문제의 해결 경로에서 재무적 지표를 개선하게 되고 이 과정에서 비재무적 성과도 얻을 수 있다는 ESG 경 영의 순기능이 현지 자회사의 시각에서도 실현이 가능한 명제임을 시사해준다.
