This study set out for the purpose of comparing the philosophical concepts of Epictetus’ Prohairesis and Zhuangzi’s Anming, based on some commonalities and differences. The epistemology of Epictetus who was one of the representative philosopher in Stoic philosophy and the theory of knowledge in Zhuanzi who inherited Laozi’s thoughts and extended a new horizon in Taoist ideology, will be contemplated based on two key concepts that must be incorporated, in order to understand their thoughts accurately. Especially, the perception about liberty in which Epictetus and Zhuangzi, in other word, the liberal discourse of both sides will function as the theme of this paper and will lead to micro-discussions related to their stance.

본 논문의 목적은 에픽테토스와 장자의 철학적 개념 ‘프로하이레시스’와 ‘안명’을 그 공통점과 차이점에 기반하여 비교하려는 데 있다. 스토아철학에서 대표적 인물 가운데 한 사람인 에픽테토스와 노자의 명맥을 이어 도가(道家) 사상의 새로운 지평을 열었던 장자, 이 둘의 인식론을 그들의 사유를 적확하게 이해하기 위해 필수적으로 포섭되어야만 하는 두 가지 핵심 개념을 토대로 고찰하고자 한다. 특히 에픽테토스와 장자의 자유에 대한 인식, 즉 두 인물의 자유론이 본 논고의 테마로 기능하며 이와 관련한 미시적 논의들을 견인할 것이다.
