This study is aimed at looking into the plan for responding the Anthropocene, which has emerged as a global ‘hot potato’ in the 21st century, through the artworks of Tomas Saraceno. The Anthropocene refers to the epoch where Earth’s environment is altered by human actions rather than the laws of nature, and it is a term coined by Crutzen for a new geological era after the Holocene. The Anthropocene is interpreted with the perspective of technological optimism in ecological modernism, with the apocalyptic perspective in eco-socialism, and with the perspective of new materialism in post-human-centric animism. Saraceno engages in artistic activities based on the perspective of new materialism in which the coexistence of humans and non-humans is emphasized under the acceptance of non-human agency. Saraceno, through his interdisciplinary approach involving art, architecture, and science and eco-friendly subjects, envisions hopeful Earth in the Anthropocene era. His projects such as the ‘Aerocene’ project, ‘Air-Port-City’ and ‘Cloud City’ transformed the notion of utopia into something realistic by using the futuristic living spaces. In this sense, Saraceno's works, which embody the idealistic future of Earth, are noteworthy as an alternative in the Anthropocene era.

이 논문은 21세기 현재 전 세계의 ‘뜨거운 감자’로 부상한 인류세에 대한 대응 방안을 토마스 사라세노의 작품을 통해 살펴본 것이다. 인류세는 지구 환경이 자연의 순리가 아닌 인간의 행위에 의해 변화되는 것으로 홀로세 이후의 새로운 지질시대를 위해 크뤼천이 고안한 용어이다. 인류세는 크게 기술 낙관론의 생태 근대주의, 종말론적 관점의 생태사회주의, 탈인간 중심주의의 신유물론 관점으로 해석된다. 사라세노는 이 중 비인간의 행위성을 인정하며 인간과 비인간의 공존을 중시하는 신유물론 관점에 기반한 작품 활동을 펼친다. 사라세노는 예술과 건축, 과학의 간학제적 접근과 환경친 화적 소재를 통해 인류세 시대의 희망적인 지구의 모습을 그린다. 그의 <에어로센> 프로젝트와 <에어- 포트-시티>, <클라우드 시티> 프로젝트는 미래형 주거공간을 통해 우리가 꿈꿔오던 유토피아의 세계 를 실현 가능한 것으로 바꾸었다. 이런 의미에서 지구의 이상적인 미래를 실천해나가는 사라세노의 작품은 인류세 시대의 대안 방안으로써 주목할 가치가 있을 것이다.
