This study examines how Regula Pastoralis, one of the writings of Pope Gregory I, was perceived and received in Anglo-Saxon England. In particular, this research explores the Life of Gregory by a Whitby monk, Ecclesiastical History of the English People by the Venerable Bede, and an Old English translation of Pastoral Care by King Alfred of Wessex. In Regula Pastoralis , Pope Gregory describes how priests should treat and look after the laity. The principles emphasized by Gregory here can also be found in the missionary work in England, organised and pursued by him. Later, the Whitby monk and Bede, who wrote about Gregory in Anglo-Saxon England, depicted Gregory as the apostle of England but showed little interest in Regula Pastoralis and its principles, which Gregory consistently emphasized. In particular, for the Whitby monk and Bede, who pursued the integration of the Church in England, it was necessary to describe Gregory as a symbol of the English Church. On the other hand, King Alfred pursued the spread of pastoral care to his subjects through the translation and dissemination of Pastoral Care . Since Alfred needed to stabilize and strengthen his religious and political authority in his newly reorganized kingdom, he focused on its original purpose of pastoral care for laypeople by translating and distributing Pastoral Care. Although all three writings emphasized Gregory's achievements, the differences in perception of Gregory and 'Pastoral Care' during the Anglo-Saxon period show a deep connection with the political and religious circumstances of Anglo-Saxon England faced by each author and recipient.

본 연구는 교황 그레고리우스 1세의 저술 중 하나인 『사목규범』이 앵글로-색 슨 시기 잉글랜드에서 어떻게 인식되고 수용되었는지를 휘트비 수도사의 『그레 고리우스 전기』와 가경자 비드의 『잉글랜드 사람들의 교회사』, 그리고 웨식스 왕국의 알프레드 왕이 고대 영어로 번역한 『사목규범』을 통해서 살펴보았다. 그 레고리우스는 『사목규범』에서 사제들이 평신도들을 어떻게 대해야하는지를 설 명하였다. 그리고 여기서 그레고리우스가 강조한 원칙들은 그가 추진한 잉글랜 드 선교 과정에서도 발견할 수 있다. 이후 앵글로-색슨 잉글랜드에서 그레고리 우스에 대한 저술을 남긴 휘트비 수도사와 비드는 잉글랜드의 사도로서의 그레 고리우스를 강조하면서도, 그레고리우스가 지속적으로 강조했던 『사목규범』과 그 안의 원칙에 대해서는 큰 관심을 보이지 않았다. 특히 잉글랜드 교회의 통합 을 추구한 휘트비의 저자와 비드에게 잉글랜드 교회의 상징으로서의 그레고리 우스를 강조할 필요가 있었다. 반면 알프레드 대왕은 『사목규범』의 번역과 보급 을 통해 목회적 돌봄이 그의 왕국 내에서 신민들에게 이루어지는 것을 추구했 다. 알프레드는 새롭게 재조직된 자신의 왕국 내에서의 자신의 종교적, 정치적 권위의 안정 및 강화할 필요가 있었으며, 이를 위해 『사목규범』을 번역 및 배포 하면서 그레고리우스의 초기 목적이었던 평신도를 위한 사목적 돌봄의 목적을 강조했다. 이처럼 비록 세 저술 모두 그레고리우스의 업적을 강조했지만, 그레 고리우스와 『사목규범』에 대한 앵글로-색슨 시기의 여러 인식의 차이점은 각 저자 및 수용자가 처했던 앵글로-색슨 시기 잉글랜드의 정치적, 종교적 상황과 깊은 연관성을 보인다.
