With the global trend of aging migrants and the increasing number of older migrants, research on older migrants has been conducted in various disciplines. This study focuses on 10 Koryeoin Babushkas(grandmothers) in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, South Korea, who migrated to South Korea in their later-lives to take care of their grandchildren and take over household chores in Koryeoin transnational families, and aims to understand their caregiving and health experiences. Babushkas are both care providers for their grandchildren and care recipients, receiving support from their adult children who live with them in times of health crisis. Having entered the country in later-life and reunited with their families in Korea, these babushkas face challenges common to later-life migrants, such as lack of financial resources and Korean language skills, adjustment to an unfamiliar environment, and disruption of social networks. As foreign-born migrants, Babushkas do not receive any financial or social services from the Korean government, and as a result, they are completely dependent on their adult children for health care and medical treatment. They are overwhelmed by the childcare and domestic duties in their adult children’s households and feel trapped in that role. In particular, their lack of personal disposable income and lack of Korean language skills severely limit their options to freely manage their illnesses and healthcare. In particular, the burden of serving as a ‘reserve army of unpaid reproductive labor’ stemming from their gendered identity as grandmothers (women) can be layered with other challenges faced by babushkas and negatively impact the health of older Babushkas. This is why systematic research is needed on the inter-generational reciprocal caregiving practices of the Koryeoin babushkas and their health crisis in old age.

전 세계적으로 이주민 고령화 추세와 노년기 이주민의 증가에 따라 고령 이주민을 대상으로 하는 연구가 다양한 학문에서 진행되고 있다. 이 연구는 국내 고려인 초국적 가족의 손자녀를 돌보고 가사를 전담하기 위해 노년기에 한국으로 이주한 광주광역시 광산구 일대의 10명의 고려인 할머니 ‘바부쉬카’(babushka)를 연구 대상으로 하여, 그들의 돌봄과 건강 경험을 규명하는 데에 주요 목적이 있다. 바부 쉬카들은 손자녀를 돌보는 돌봄 제공자이면서 건강 위기 등에서 동거 성인 자녀의 도움을 받는 돌봄 수혜자이다. 노년기에 입국해 한국 가족과 재결합한 바부쉬카는 경제력과 한국어 능력의 부족, 낯선 환경에 대한 적응, 사회적 네트워크의 단절 등 노년기 이주자가 공통으로 직면하는 어려움에 마주하고 있다. 이들 바부쉬카는 외국인 신분의 이주자로서 한국 정부의 재정지원이나 사회서비스를 일절 받지 못하 며, 이런 상황에서 질병 치료와 건강관리 등을 동거 성인 자녀에게 전적으로 의존 하고 있다. 이들은 성인 자녀의 가정에서 호혜적 돌봄 제공자와 수혜자이면서도, 육아 및 가사 업무에 압도되어 그 역할에 갇혀 있다고도 생각한다. 특히 개인적인 실소득이 없으며 한국어 능력의 부족은 이들 바부쉬카가 자유롭게 질병과 건강관 리를 할 수 있는 선택의 폭을 절대적으로 제한하고 있다. 특히 할머니(여성)라는 젠더적 정체성에서 비롯된 ‘무급 재생산 노동예비군’ 역할의 과중함은 바부쉬카가 직면한 여러 다른 어려움과 함께 중층적으로 작용하여, 노년 바부쉬카의 건강에 부정적 영향을 미칠 수 있다. 이는 국내 고려인 바부쉬카의 세대 간 호혜적 돌봄 수행과 이들의 노년기 건강 위기에 관한 체계적인 연구가 필요한 이유이기도 하다.
