This study employed the framework of grounded theory methodology to analyze the following questions: ‘What are the experiences of Korean TCK adolescents in terms of their transnational relocation during overseas sojourn?’ and ‘What is the process through which they undergo in the formation of their identities?’. For data collection, the researcher conducted interviews with a total of 18 Korean secondary students who hold Korean nationality while sojourning abroad. The causal conditions were identified as attempts to acquire cultural capital and transnational relocation. The factors influencing the confusion experienced by participants were identified as highly mobile lifestyle, the need for multiple languages, differences in educational approaches, and cultural disparities. Korean TCK adolescents were observed to employ various adaptation strategies using resources within their micro-, meso-, and macro-systems. Ultimately, the process of identity formation for Korean TCK adolescents was identified as a progression toward ‘Becoming Global Citizens.’ This process was analyzed to unfold in five stages: the transition stage, the confusion stage, the adjustment stage, the identity reaffirmation stage, and the pursuit of global citizenship stage. Finally, this study concluded with a discussion on its limitations and recommendations for future research.

본 연구는 현재 해외에 체류하고 있는 한국 TCK 청소년들의 초국가적 이동의 경험 은 어떠한가? 그들이 정체성을 형성해가는 과정은 어떠한가?라는 문제를 근거이론 방 법론을 적용하여 분석하였다. 자료수집을 위해 해외 소재 국제학교 한국 중·고등학생 총 18명을 인터뷰하였다. 자료 분석 과정은 MAXQDA를 활용하여 개방 코딩, 축 코딩, 선택 코딩, 과정 분석을 거쳤다. 분석 결과, 중심 현상은 대한민국 국적을 소지한 채 해 외에 체류하고 있는 한국 청소년들이 경험하는 ‘변화에 따른 혼란’으로 나타났다. 인과 적 조건은 문화자본 획득 시도 및 초국가적 이동으로 파악되었다. 참여자들이 경험하 는 혼란에 영향을 주는 요인은 이동성이 높은 삶의 방식, 여러 언어의 필요, 교육방식의 차이, 문화적 차이 등으로 나타났다. 한국 TCK 청소년들은 자신을 둘러싼 미시·중간· 거시체계의 자원을 활용하여 다양한 적응 전략을 실천하고 있었다. 궁극적으로 한국 TCK 청소년들의 정체성 형성과정은 ‘세계시민 되어가기’의 과정으로 파악되었다. 이러 한 과정은 이동 단계, 혼란 단계, 조정 단계, 정체성 재확립 단계, 세계시민성 추구 단계 의 다섯 단계를 거치는 것으로 분석되었다. 마지막으로 본 연구의 제한점과 후속 연구 를 위한 제언에 대해 논의하였다.
