In this paper, we looked at the issues of tradition and modernity intertwined in through analysis of the work and comparison with other works. The subjects of study were 『Sigyeong(詩經)』, which is important in Oriental literary tradition, and Chaucer's 『Canterbury Tales』 and Boccaccio's 『Decameron』, which are evaluated as having laid the foundation for modern literature in the West, and which succeed in demonstrating the prosaic tendency of verse. In addition, some of the poetic works published in modern media were also analyzed. The characteristics can be summarized as follows. First, the compositional characteristic of is an omnibus structure. This is a factor that makes it possible to enjoy each paragraph of the work while pursuing its theme of criticism and indictment of reality. These characteristics are related to the tendency to become prose in the lyrics of the late Joseon(朝鮮) Dynasty and have similar aspects to the omnibus compositions 『Decameron』 and 『Canterbury Tales』. Second, the objects or spaces where the events of converge toward the poetic speaker are typical. This is a gradual reduction of the event object and a characteristic of that was influenced by the composition method of traditional Oriental works such as 『Sigyeong(詩經)』. Third, the characters are replaced appropriately according to the topic of each paragraph. In addition, real and unspecified characters appear together, effectively integrating the subtopics of each paragraph into the overall topic. Fourth, at the conclusion of the text, likens reality to a diseased state and presents an abstract treatment for it. In this way, the method of diagnosing reality as a diseased state and suggesting indirect remedies through abstract metaphors can also be seen in modern poetic works. It appears that the traditional typicality of works such as contributed to the establishment of the modern style of poetry.

본 논문은 <향산별곡>의 작품 분석과 타 작품과의 비교를 통해 <향산별곡>에 착종되어 있는 전통과 근대적 성격의 문제를 살펴본 글이다. 연구 대상으로는 동양 의 시가 문학 전통에서 중요한 『시경』 및 서구에서 문학의 근대적 단초를 마련한 것으로 평가받으며, 운문의 산문화 경향을 잘 보여주는 초서의 『캔터베리 이야기』 와 보카치오의 『데카메론』을 선정하였다. 아울러 근대계몽기 매체에 발표된 시가 작품들 일부도 함께 다루었다. 분석 결과로 도출한 특성을 정리하면 다음과 같다. 먼저 <향산별곡> 구성상의 특성은 옴니버스 방식이라는 점이다. 이는 현실비판과 고발이라는 작품의 주제를 지향하면서 작품의 단락별 향유가 가능하게 하는 요인이 다. 이러한 특성은 조선후기 가사의 산문화 경향과 연관성을 지니고 있으며, 옴니버스 구성인 『데카메론』이나 『캔터베리 이야기』와 유사한 측면을 지니고 있다. 둘째, <향산별곡>의 사건이 구현되는 공간을 포함한 대상은 화자를 기준삼아 화자 쪽으로 수렴해 들어오는 사건 대상의 점강화(漸降化)를 보인다는 점이다. 이는 <향산별곡>의 특성이면서 『시경』등 동양의 전통적 작품 구성법에서 영향을 받 았다고 할 수 있다. 셋째, 등장인물들이 각 단락의 주제에 알맞게 적절히 체번(替番)하는 추이를 보인다는 것이다. 또한 각 단락의 중심 제재에 적합한 실존 인물과 불특정한 인물이 함께 출현하여 각 단락의 소주제가 효과적으로 전체 주제를 향해 통합하고 있다. 넷째, <향산별곡>은 본사 말미와 결사에서 현실을 병든 상태에 비유하고, 그 추상적 치료법을 제시하고 있다. 이처럼 추상적 비유로 현실을 병든 상태로 진단하고, 우회적 처방을 제시하는 방식은 근대계몽기 시가 작품에서도 확인할 수 있는 것으로서 근대적 시가 양식의 성립에도 <향산별곡>과 같은 작품의 전통적 전형성 (典型性)이 일조하고 있음을 확인할 수 있다.
