Based on a critical review of the concept of sustainable development (SD), this paper aims to reveal that learners' ethical reflection on sustainable development is the basis for the success or failure of education for sustainable development (ESD). To this end, in Chapter 2, I reveal that the SD concept declared by the United Nations still has unclear conceptual limitations from its emergence to today. I also briefly reviewed the factors that make it difficult to implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) due to this conceptual ambiguity. In Chapter 3, I examine the ethical issues that can be raised from the concepts of ‘need’, ‘future generations’ and ‘development’ embedded in SD as a foundation for ESD, Lastly, in Chapter 4, I mentioned the importance of cultivating virtue and educating human dignity as elements of ethical education necessary for SD.

본 논문에서 연구자는, 그간 학계에서 당연한 것처럼 쓰이고 있는 지속가능발전(SD) 개념이 그 내용을 이루고 있는 ‘필요’, ‘미래 세대’, ‘발전’을 해석할 때 그다지 명료하지 못한 개념적인 한계를 지니고 있 음을 논구하였다. 특히 연구자는 SD의 주요 이행 목표로 제시되고 있 는 경제, 사회, 환경의 영역이 서로 잠재적인 불균형과 갈등 관계에 있 음을 밝히고자 하였다. 이러한 SD의 한계에도 불구하고, 인류의 지속 가능한 번영을 성취하기 위해 지속가능발전목표(SDGs)를 이행하여 교 육하고자 한다면, 우리는 경제, 사회, 환경 영역을 관통하는 가치의 기 초로서 인간 존엄성을 중요한 기준으로 삼아 덕성을 함양하고 인간 존엄성 보장을 위해 실천해야 할 것이다.
