This papar aims to answer the question “Is akratic action irrational?” Akrasia has traditionally been cited as an example of practical irrationality because it is free intentional action contrary to an agent’s better judgment. Akrasia has been also known to occur due to irrational emotions. Since the 1990s, some philosophers, including A. McIntyre have argued that in certain situations, akrasia may be more rational than enkrateia, based on the rational function of emotions. The rationality thesis of akrasia based on the possibility of inverse akrasia can be justified if and only if several conditions are satisfied. The several conditions are as follows.: The meaning of the agent’s better judgment and intention in the definition of akrasia needs to be reinterpreted in an expanded manner; the agent’s better judgment is actually an incorrect judgment; akratic action may be occurred by a well-functioning emotional mechanism that is reliably keying the agent to her reasons etc. I agree with the rationality thesis of akrasia in a limited sense that these several conditions are satisfied. However, I believe that this thesis cannot completely eliminate the practical irrationality of akrasia.

본 논문은 “아크라시아는 비합리적인가?”라는 질문에 대한 적절한 답을 제시하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 아크라시아는 행위자의 더 나은 판단에 어긋나는 자유롭고 의도적인 행위이기 때문에 전통적으로 실천 적 비합리성의 대표적인 사례로 거론되어 왔다. 그리고 아크라시아는 감정의 비합리적인 작용으로 인해 발생하는 것으로 알려져 왔다. 그런 데 1990년대 이후 맥킨타이어를 비롯한 일군의 학자들은 감정의 합리 적 작용에 의해 아크라시아가 때로는 행위자의 더 나은 판단에 일치하 는 행위보다 합리적일 수 있다고 주장한다. 이러한 역-아크라시아의 가능성에 근거한 아크라시아의 합리성 논제가 성립하기 위해서는 아크 라시아의 정의에서 행위자의 더 나은 판단과 의도가 확장된 의미로 재 해석되어야 하고, 행위자의 더 나은 판단이 실제로는 옳지 않은 판단 이어야 하며, 행위자의 감정이 잘 작동되어 자제력 없는 행위를 해야 할 좋은 이유를 제공한다는 것을 비롯한 여러 조건을 충족해야만 한다. 본 연구자는 이러한 여러 조건을 모두 충족한다는 제한적인 의미 에서만 아크라시아의 합리성 논제에 동의할 수 있지만, 이 논제가 아 크라시아의 실천적 비합리성을 완전히 제거할 수는 없다고 생각한다.
