The purpose of this study is to explore the mediating effect of social support in the relationship between self-stigma and school adjustment in upper elementary school children. For this purpose, a survey was administered with 342 5th and 6th grade elementary school students in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Incheon. The main findings of this study are as follows. First, there was a significant correlation between self-stigma, school adjustment, and social support perceived by upper elementary school children. Self-stigma was negatively correlated with school adjustment; social support and school life adjustment showed a positive correlation; and self-stigma was negatively associated with social support. Second, a partial mediating effect of social support was found in the relationship between self-stigma and school adjustment. This shows that students who internalize negative social stigma against themselves tend to perceive lower social support provided by family, teachers, and friends, which can lead to a low level of adjustment to school life. The results suggest ideas for counseling programs to improve elementary school students’ school adjustment. The limitations of the study and suggestions for follow-up research are discussed.

이 연구는 초등학교 고학년 아동이 지각한 자기 낙인과 학교생활적응의 관계에서 사회적 지 지의 매개효과를 검증하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 이를 위해 서울, 경기, 인천 지역에 소재한 초등학교 5, 6학년 학생 342명에게 설문 조사를 실시하였다. 주요 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 초등학교 고학년 아동이 지각한 자기 낙인과 학교생활적응, 사회적 지지는 모두 유의 미한 상관관계가 있었다. 자기 낙인과 학교생활적응은 부적 상관, 사회적 지지와 학교생활적 응은 정적 상관, 자기 낙인과 사회적 지지는 부적 상관관계를 보였다. 둘째, 초등학교 고학년 아동의 자기 낙인과 학교생활적응의 관계에서 사회적 지지의 부분매개효과가 나타났다. 이는 자신에 대한 부정적 사회적 낙인을 내면화한 학생일수록 가족, 교사, 친구로부터 제공되는 사회적 지지를 낮게 지각하는 경향을 보이며, 이는 곧 낮은 학교생활적응으로 이어질 수 있 음을 뜻한다. 연구 결과가 초등학생의 학교생활적응 향상을 위한 상담 및 프로그램 개발에 주는 시사점을 논하고, 연구의 제한점 및 후속 연구를 위한 제언을 기술하였다.
