This paper aims to investigate whether the sermon of ChatGPT, a form of artificial intelligence(AI) that has emerged with the accelerated development of the Fourth Industrial Revolution in the post-COVID era, aligns with the coherence of Buddhist doctrines. Previous papers have primarily addressed the potential for AI to attain enlightenment. However, this paper intends to assess the coherence of ChatGPT by evaluating its intellectual capabilities. Similar to Buddha’s first sermon after attaining enlightenment, it hold significant importance in Buddhism. To determine whether ChatGPT possesses the ability to match these crucial Buddhist Sermons and the sermon of ChatGPT, sermon answer are derived by asking questions regarding Buddhist doctrines. The answers will be compared with text and academic papers to evaluate their coherence with Buddhist teachings. Considering that significant doctrinal differences exist across different eras of Buddhism, inquiries about doctrines will be categorized into Early Buddhism, Sectarian Buddhism, and Mahāyāna Buddhism. After evaluating the coherence of ChatGPT’s response, the paper intends to explore the potential of ChatGPT as an alternative in the role of Buddhist Sermons. The result indicates that while ChatGPT may exhibit linguistic and Buddhist scholarly errors, it can be viewed positively in its ability to convey the fundamental doctrines. Therefore, this study emphasizes the need for Buddhism to reconsider its perception in oder to recognize and resolve this crisis.

본고는 포스트 코로나 시대 4차 산업의 발달 가속화로 도래한 인공지능(AI)의 기술 중 하나인 챗GPT의 설법이 불교 교리의 정합성과 일치하는지 연구하고자 한다. 이전에는 AI의 해탈 가능성에 대한 가능성을 다룬 논문들이 주를 이뤘다. 그러나 본고에서는 챗GPT의 정합성 평가를 위해 지적 능력을 판단할 예정이다. 붓다가 깨달음을 증득 후, 제자들에게 초전법륜을 설했던 것처럼, 불교에서 설법이 가지는 의미는 중대하다. 이 중대한 설법과 챗GPT의 답변이 일치할 수 있는지에 대한 능력을 판별하기 위하여 불교 교리에 관한 질문을 던짐으로써 설법 답안을 도출한다. 이 답안이 불교의 가르침과 일치하는지에 대해서 경전과 논문을 기반으로 비교를 통해 적절성을 검토한다. 불교 교리는 시대별로 주요 교리가 차이가 나기 때문에 초기불교, 부파불교, 대승불교로 구분하여 교리에 대한 질문을 할 것이다. 챗GPT의 답안의 정합성을 평가한 후, 불교 설법의 역할에 대한 대체 가능성을 다뤄보고자 한다. 이를 통해서 챗GPT가 언어적⋅불교 사학적 오류는 존재하지만, 본질적인 교리를 설법하는 데 있어서 긍정적인 시각으로 바라볼 수 있다는 결과를 도출할 것이다. 이를 통해 불교가 위기를 인식하고 해결하기 위한 인식 재고의 필요성을 강조하고자 한다.
