This article compares Mujeong (1917), a representative work by Lee Kwang-Soo, and To Tam (1925), a work by Hoang Ngoc Phach. This study focuses on how Korean and Vietnamese authors depict free love in modern novels. Intellectuals in Korea and Vietnam felt the need to 'reform the country' in modernizing the country and valuing the family, the country's basic unit. They were concerned with respect and love between husband and wife and spread the idea of creating a modernized family and free love. Mujeong and To Tam are typical novels in modern Korean and Vietnamese literature, expressing criticism of traditional marriage customs based on Confucianism and supporting the ideology of free love. In the novel Mujeong, Lee Kwang-Soo strongly criticizes the current marriage system as a 'cruel marriage system' through the main character's dialogue and argues that monogamy should be the social norm. In the work To Tam, the male and female protagonists all have modern education and have their parents choose their betrothed. Instead, they fall in love, engaging in a 'free love' relationship. Sadly, they get separated, and the heroine eventually dies. Hoang Ngoc Phach raises questions for readers about the evil customs of the marriage system by fully expressing the emotions of tragedy and sadness caused by separation and death in his novel.

이 논문은 한국과 베트남 근대문학의 대표 작품인 이광수의 장편소설 <무정>(1917)과 호앙 응옥 파익의 장편소설 <또 떰 Tố Tâm>(1925)을 대비･연구함으로써 양국 근대소설에 그려진 자유연애 양 상을 조명하였다. 당시 한국과 베트남의 지식인들은 근대화 과정에서 자기반성의 일환으로 민족개조의 필요 성을 인식하였고 국가의 기본 단위인 가정에 집중하였다. 그들은 특히 부부간의 존중과 사랑에 대해 관심을 갖고, 신(新)가정 만들기와 자유연애 사상을 주장하였다. <무정>과 <또 떰>은 한국과 베트남의 근대문학을 대표하는 장편소설들로서, 공통적으로 유교적 혼인 폐습에 대한 비판과 자유연애에 대한 지향성을 보여준다. 이광수는 <무정>에서 주인공의 발화를 통해 기존의 혼인 제도를 ‘흉악한 혼인제도’로 직접적으로 비판하며 일부일처제를 주장하였다. <또 떰>은 신교육을 받은 남녀 주인공이 각자의 정혼자가 있음에도 불구하고 이를 거부하고 자유연애를 즐기다가 결별 후 결국 여주 인공이 죽는 결말을 보여준다. 호앙 응옥 파익은 결별과 죽음으로 인한 비극과 슬픔의 정서를 한껏 표현함으 로써 독자들에게 구식(舊式) 혼인제도의 악습에 대한 문제를 제기하였다.
