In the early days when Buddhism was introduced to Korean peninsula, it firstly was understood and accepted as an esoteric elements of Mahayana Buddhism for healing and salvation rather than a complicated and profound doctrinal understanding. Therefore, a deep understanding of the esoteric aspects of Korean Buddhism demands of understanding the overall background and flow of Korean Buddhism. One of the esoteric forms of Korean Buddhism is the Apothecary Faith of the Silla Dynasty. Bhaisajyaguru-belief (藥師信仰) of Silla Buddhism were widely practiced throughout the civilian and royal hierarchies of Silla from the time of the introduction of Buddhism, as evidenced by extant texts and artifacts of Silla Buddhism and historical works. Bhaisajyaguru-belief also had a significant impact on the formation of Silla Buddhism and the development of Esoteric Buddhism of Silla which the Samguk Yusa (三國遺事) and Samguk Sagi (三國史記) being be the central to the literature that conveys what Bhaisajyaguru-belief (藥師 信仰) at that time. The Silla’s medical science and pharmacist faith can be characterized by its focus on curing disease, saving lives, and returning to the Pure Land of the East. The Silla society’s Bhaisajyaguru-belief can be said to have shaped Silla’s welfare worldview based on the Bodhisattva’s idea of bodhichitta, which is in line with modern welfare ideologies. In Silla society, when sentient beings groaned under the temporal suffering of hunger, disease, and poverty, Bhaisajyaguru sought to relieve them from their temporal suffering. Therefore, Bhaisajyaguru’s The 12 Great Vows are the ultimate embodiment of bodhichitta, actively realizing Bhaisajyaguru’s bodhichitta to institutionalize and enlighten sentient beings so that they can be born in the Pure Land. Therefore, this paper aims to explore the unique culture of Silla Buddhism and the deep esoteric background of Korean Buddhism through the Bhaisajyaguru-belief.

불교가 한반도에 도입되는 초기부터 불교는 교리적 깊은 이해보다는 복을 구 하는 것과 병을 치료하는 목적의 밀교적인 요소에 의해 먼저 이해되고 수용되었 다. 이에 한국불교의 전체적인 흐름과 배경을 이해하려면 밀교적 측면에 대한 깊 은 이해가 필요하다. 이러한 한국불교의 밀교적 신앙 형태 가운데 가장 대표적인 것으로 신라시대의 약사신앙이 있다. 신라의 약사신앙은 불교의 도입단계에서부 터 신라 왕실과 귀족 민간계층 전반에 걸쳐 크게 성행하였음을 현존하는 유적과 자료를 통해 알 수 있다. 약사신앙이 전래하던 시기와 이후의 유행 형태를 전하는 중심 문헌으로는 『삼국유사』와 『삼국사기』가 있다. 전해지는 문헌을 통해 약사신앙 이 신라불교의 형성에 끼친 영향이 매우 크다는 것을 볼 수 있다. 신라시대 약사 신앙의 특성을 요약하면 치병(治病)과 구복(求福) 그리고 동방정유리정토(東方淨琉 璃淨土)의 왕생에 대한 믿음이다. 이 같은 신라 사회의 약사신앙은 불보살의 보리 심 사상에 기반한 신라의 복지적 세계관을 형성하였다고 할 수 있으며, 이것은 현 대의 복지 이념과 맞닿은 것이다. 즉 신라 사회의 질병과 기아, 빈민 등의 현세적 고통으로 중생이 신음할 때 약사여래의 대비심은 중생을 현세 고통으로부터 구원 하고자 하였다. 따라서 약사여래의 12대원은 약사여래가 보리심을 적극적으로 구 현하는 것으로써, 중생심을 제도하고 거두어 불국토에 태어나게 하려는 보리심 사 상의 궁극인 것이다. 이에 본 논문은 신라불교라는 독자적 문화에 형성된 약사여래의 보리심 사상을 고찰하고, 한국불교가 지닌 깊은 밀교적 배경을 통해 신라시 대의 약사신앙을 살펴보고자 한다.
