Despite the growing number of foreigners living in the Korea, there has been little research on their confidence in police. While there has been a lot of research on confidence in police in other countries, including different racial and ethnic groups, most of the research in Korea has been conducted among its own citizens. Since confidence in police is formed differently in different countries, there are limitations in applying foreign studies to Korea society. Therefore, it is important for the police to develop a trustful relationship with foreigners in order to effectively carry out their increasingly foreign-related tasks. This study examined how various factors affect confidence in police among foreigners living in Korea. This study examined how foreigners' experience of discrimination, level of assimilation into Korean society, media contact, and collective efficacy affect their confidence in police. The analysis of 1,200 foreigners living in foreign population concentrated areas in Korea showed that higher collective efficacy was associated with significantly higher confidence in police. In addition, the results showed that the fewer the number of discrimination experiences, the longer the period of residence, and the more media contact, the higher the confidence in police. Based on the results of the study policy recommendations and limitations for the study are presented.

국내에 거주하고 있는 외국인의 수는 점차 증가하고 있지만, 이들의 경찰 신뢰에 관한 연구는 국 내에서 많이 진행되지 않았다. 외국의 경우 다양한 인종과 민족을 포함하여 경찰 신뢰에 관한 연구 가 활발하게 진행되었지만, 국내의 경우 대다수의 연구가 자국 국민을 대상으로 진행되었다. 경찰 신뢰는 국가마다 다르게 형성되기 때문에 외국의 연구를 한국 사회에 적용하기에 한계가 있다. 따라 서 증가하는 외국인 관련 업무를 경찰이 효율적으로 수행하기 위해서는 외국인들과의 신뢰 관계 형 성이 중요하다. 이 연구는 국내에 거주하는 외국인들을 대상으로 그들이 가지는 여러 요인이 경찰 신뢰에 어떠한 영향을 주는지 검증하였다. 이를 위하여 외국인들이 경험한 차별 경험, 한국 사회 동 화 정도, 미디어 접촉 정도, 그리고 집합 효율성이 경찰 신뢰에 어떠한 영향을 주는지 조사하였다. 국내 외국인 밀집 지역에 거주하는 외국인 1,200명을 대상으로 분석한 결과, 집합 효율성이 높을 수록 경찰 신뢰가 유의미하게 높은 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 차별 경험 횟수가 적을수록, 거주 기간이 길수록, 그리고 미디어 접촉 정도가 많을수록 경찰에 대한 신뢰가 높은 것으로 나타났다. 연구 결과 를 바탕으로 정책적 제언과 연구의 한계점을 제시하였다.
