Sexual assault on university campuses continues to be a serious problem in South Korea. The current study examined attitudes toward women and empathy as predictors of rape myth acceptance among South Korean university students. Further, this study explored whether students’ participation in a rape education program at universities has an impact on their acceptance of rape myths. Surveys from 415 undergraduate students at a private university in South Korea were analyzed using a four-step hierarchical multiple regression analysis. The study findings indicated that higher levels of rape myth acceptance were predicted by the greater endorsement of traditional attitudes toward women and decreased levels of empathy. In addition, this research found the gender effect on rape myth acceptance, with male students holding significantly higher levels of rape myth acceptance than their female counterparts. However, this study found no significant impact of attending a rape prevention program on rape myth acceptance among the sampled student participants. Implications for rape prevention program instruction and future research directions are discussed.

성폭력 범죄는 피해자에게 신체적·정신적 해악을 끼치는 심각한 사회문제이다. 본 연구에서는 대학생들의 강간 통념 수용의 정도를 알아보고, 여기에 여성에 대한 태도와 공감이 강간 통념 수 용에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. 또한 대학 내 성폭력 예방 교육프로그램의 참여가 학생들의 강 간 통념 수용에 미치는 영향을 연구하였다. 이를 위해 경기도 소재 사립대학교 남녀 대학생 총 415명을 대상으로 설문조사를 시행하였으며, 4단계의 위계적 다중 회귀분석을 통해 자료를 분석 하였다. 분석 결과, 여성에 대한 전통적인 성역할 태도의 수용 정도가 높을수록, 공감 능력이 낮을 수록, 강간 통념의 수용 정도가 높아지는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 연구 결과는 강간 통념 수용에 있어 통계적으로 유의한 성별 차이를 보여준다. 즉, 남학생들이 여학생들보다 강간 통념의 수용 정도가 높은 것으로 나타났다. 하지만 대학 내 성폭력 예방 교육프로그램 참여는 조사대상자들의 강간 통념 수용에 유의한 영향을 미치지는 못한 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로, 성폭력 예방 교육 프로그램의 내용과 참여자 구성에 대한 시사점과 향후 연구 방향에 대해 논의하였다.
