This paper introduces sixteen tales by E. B. Landis, collected at the end of the 19th century. Landis published seven stories under the title "Korean Folk-Tales" in The China Review, four stories under the title "Korean Folk Tales" in The Journal of America Folklore, and five stories under the title "Folk Tales of Korean Children" in the Journal of Buddhist Text Society of India. Landis's deep interest in the lower classes of Chosun led him to collect and translate stories with a variety of meanings. Most of these stories are about children who have lost their father or parents. The main character overcomes hardships and has a happy ending. This is also a characteristic of Chosun folk tales. However, Landis chose these stories because of his interest in the lower classes of Chosun. The tiger, an iconic symbol of Chosun, plays a variety of roles in Landis's stories. This shows that the Chosun tiger, which has become famous in the West as a hunting animal, has meaning in a variety of imaginative ways. The study of Korean tales from the late 19th century, including Landis's sixteen tales, is just beginning. I hope this paper will be useful for further research.

이 논문은 19세기 말에 채록한 E. B. Landis(랜디스)의 설화 열여섯 편을 소개하고 있다. 랜디스는 The China Review 에 “Korean Folk-Tales”라는 제목 아래에 일곱 편의 이야기를, The Journal of America Folklore에 “Korean Folk Tales”라는 제목 아래에 네 편의 이야기, Journal of Buddhist Text Society of India 에 “Folk Tales of Korean Children” 다섯 편의 이야기를 발표했다. 랜디스는 조선의 하층민에 대한 깊은 관심을 지니고 있었고, 그러한 성향을 토대로 다양한 의미를 지닌 이야기들을 채록해서 번역한 것이다. 이 이야기들에 대부분은 아버지나 부모를 잃은 아이가 주인공이다. 주인공은 고난을 이겨내며 행복한 결말을 맞는다. 이것은 조선 설화의 특징이기도 하다. 그러나 이러한 이야기들을 선택한 것은 랜디스가 조선의 하층민에 대해 관심을 지니고 있었기에 가능한 것이었다. 조선의 상징과도 같은 호랑이는 랜디스가 채록한 설화 안에서 다양한 역할을 보여준다. 서구 사회에 사냥감으로 유명해진 조선의 호랑이가 다채로운 상상 안에서 의미를 지니고 있음을 보여준다고 할 수 있다. 랜디스의 열여섯 편의 설화를 비롯해 19세기 후반부터 조사된 우리 설화에 대한 연구는 시작 단계이다. 이 논문이 이후에 진행될 연구에 도움이 되길 바란다.
