KOJIMA Nobuo’s “Embracing Family” is a narrative about the active “hybridization” of the American culture that took root in postwar Japan and the Japanese people who welcomed and followed them, and about the reality of a Japanese society that lost its footing as a result of this contradictory hybridization. By focusing on the relationship between the America and Japan implied in “Embracing Family” and its unique personal narrative style, this paper attempts to interpret the author’s unique message as a metaphor for postwar America-Japan relations and Japanese society. hybridization makes one mistakenly think of the other as a friend, but it also makes one question one’s own identity. Shunsuke sadly looks away from his family, which has lost its cohesion due to hybridized with the America and represents the Japanese of the 1960s who are losing their traditional identity and sense of ethics. “Embracing Family” began as a motif of the author’s “personal” daily life, but evolved into a social novel highlighting the “contemporary issues” facing Japan. This paper will examine what has been gained and lost from the relationship with the other, the America, how the Japanese individual has been shaken by this relationship, and how the Japanese community has changed as a result. This paper confirms that the novel is a socially critical story that satirizes Japan and the Japanese people of the time. And beyond the writer’s personal interpretation, we can ask and answer questions about the determinants that shaped the “Japan” of today.

고지마 노부오의 『포옹가족』은 전후 일본에 뿌리를 내리게 된 미국(문화)과 그들을 기꺼이 환대하며 추종한 일본인의 적극적인 ‘교배’에 관한 서사이자, 그 모순적인 교배가 잉태한 결과 물로써 발 디딜 곳을 잃은 일본 사회의 현실에 관한 서사이다. 본고는 『포옹가족』에 함의된 미국과 일본의 관계성, 그리고 독특한 사소설적 기술(記述) 방식에 주목하여, 전후 미일 관계 와 일본 사회를 은유적으로 담아낸 작가 특유의 메시지를 해석하고자 한다. 교배는 한때 타자를 친구로 여기도록 착각하게 만들지만, 동시에 자신의 정체성에 대해 의 문이 들도록 만든다. 미국과의 교배로 인해 결속력을 잃은 가족을 슬프게 바라보는 슌스케는 전통적인 정체성과 윤리관을 상실해가는 1960년대 일본인을 표상한다. 『포옹가족』은 작가의 ‘사적’인 일상을 모티브로 출발했으나 일본이 처한 ‘현대 문제’를 부각시킨 사회적 소설로 발 전했다. 타자 미국과의 관계에서 얻은 것과 잃은 것은 무엇인지, 그로 인해 일본인이라는 개인 이 어떻게 흔들렸는지, 결과적으로 일본이라는 공동체가 어떻게 변화했는지등, 본고는 이 소설이 당시대를 살아가는 일본과 일본인을 정면에서 풍자한 사회 비판적 서사임을 확인한다. 그리고 작가에 대한 사적인 해석에 머무르지 않고 오늘날의 ‘일본’을 형성한 결정 요소에 관해 질의와 답을 얻게 된다.

小島信夫の『抱擁家族』は、戦後日本に根付いたアメリカ(文化)と、それを喜んで歓待し追従した 日本人の積極的な｢交配｣に関する物語であり、その矛盾した交配が胚胎した結果として足場をなくし た日本社会の現実に関する物語である。本稿では、『抱擁家族』に含まれているアメリカと日本の関 係性、そして独特の私小説的記述に注目し、戦後の日米関係と日本社会を比喩的に捉えた作家な らではのメッセージを解釈する。 交配は他者を友人として受け入れるように一時的な錯覚を覚えさせるが、同時に自分のアイデン ティティについて疑問を抱くように導く。アメリカとの交配によって結束力を失った家族を悲しげに見送 る俊介は、伝統的なアイデンティティと倫理観を失いつつある1960年代の日本人を表象している。『抱擁家族』は作家の｢私的｣な日常をモチーフに出発したが、日本が直面している｢現代問題｣を浮き 彫りにした社会小説にまで発展した。他者であるアメリカとの関係から得たものと失ったものとは何 か、それによって日本人という個人がどのように揺らいだのか、結果として日本という共同体がどのよ うに変化したのかなど、本稿はこの小説が当時代を生きる日本と日本人を正面から風刺した社会批 判的な物語であることを確認する。そして作家の私的な解釈にとどまらず、今日の｢日本｣を形成した 決定要素についての問いと答えを得ることができる。
