This study examines the road system and transportation network in the Joseon Dynasty. I have attempted to recreate a case of movement centered on Yang-ju’s(楊州) Hoeamsa(檜巖寺) by dividing it into two parts: a political designation known as Yanggyeong(兩京) and Hoeamsa, and a religious designation called Neungchimsa(陵寢寺) and the route to and from Hoeamsa. To achieve this, I have examined the composition of the Joseon Dynasty’s public road system as identified in historical sources and have attempted to geographically reconstruct the road system in Yang-ju using HGIS based on a spatial information database. To reconstruct the road network of the Joseon Dynasty, I have compiled and databased the spatial information found in historical sources over a time series. I have then cross-referenced this information with the spatial data available on topographic maps of the Korean Peninsula from the early 20th century. Additionally, I have analyzed the distribution of Yeok(驛) and Won(院), which are transportation institutions integral to the road system, and have examined their time-series trends while determining their locations in Yang-ju. Subsequently, I have applied a network analysis algorithm to extract the road system recorded in Jiriji (地理志) of the Joseon Dynasty, along with the routes between Hoeamsa and various locations. As discussed above, the historical-geographical approach centered on Hoeamsa holds significance not only in understanding the historicity of Hoeamsa from multiple perspectives but also as a case study that allows us to examine the operation of the historical road system and the transportation infrastructure that facilitated it.

연구에서는 조선 전기의 도로 체계와 교통기관의 편제 양상을 검토하고, 이를 바탕 으로 당대 양주 회암사를 중심으로 발생한 이동 사례를 양경이라는 정치적 지명과 회암 사, 그리고 능침사라는 종교적 지명과 회암사 간 왕래 경로라는 두 가지로 나누어 재현을 시도하였다. 이를 위해 문헌에서 확인되는 조선시대 공적 도로 체계의 구성 양상을 검토 하고, 해당 공간정보를 데이터베이스화한 내용을 바탕으로 HGIS를 활용한 양주 군현 내 도로 체계의 지리적 복원을 시도하였다. 우선 문헌 사료에서 발견되는 공간 정보가 시계열 순으로 축적되는 내용을 데이터베이스화하고, 20세기 초의 한반도 지형도에 나타난 공간 정보와의 대응 양상을 추적하여 조선시대 도로 네트워크를 재현하였다. 또한 도로 체계를 실현하는 교통 기관인 역과 원의 편제 양상과 시계열 추이를 분석하고, 양주 소재 역과 원의 위치를 비정하였다. 여기에 네트워크 분석 알고리즘을 적용시켜 조선시대 지리지에 수록된 도로 체계와 회암사와 각 지명 간의 경로를 추출하였다. 이상 의 회암사를 중심으로 한 역사지리적 관점의 접근은 비단 회암사의 역사성을 다양한 각도에서 이해하는 것 이상으로, 과거의 도로 체계와 그것을 실현하는 교통기관의 운영 양상을 확인할 수 있는 환경 속 사례라는 점에서 의미를 지닌다.
