(Purpose) The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceptions of Korean soldiers about multicultural soldiers and children of North Korean refugees in the Korean Armed Forces, including their actual perceptions, enrollment in the military, adaptation to the unit, and negative perceptions and concerns. (Research methods) To do so, it utilized survey data and conducted an empirical analysis. (Findings) The main findings are that there is a wide range of differences across military branches and locations. The majority of soldiers were "not sure" or "did not respond" to the question of how well multicultural soldiers and children of North Korean refugees fit in, with a high rate of 70%, which is interpreted as a lack of understanding of multicultural soldiers, i.e., low acceptance. In addition, while there was no significant opposition to the inclusion of multicultural soldiers and children of North Korean refugees in the military, the Marine Corps was somewhat more conservative than the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Furthermore, while the respondents were aware of issues such as discrimination and maladjustment, they did not appear to be actively addressing them. (Conclusion and recommendations) These findings, along with the implications of the Singapore and U.S. cases, can raise awareness of educational issues and challenges to respond to the increasing diversity of the Korean military, including multiculturalism, that may emerge in the future.

(연구목적) 본 연구의 목적은 우리 국군 장병들의 다문화 병사 및 북한이탈주민 자녀 병사들에 대한 인식조사를 통해, 실제 이들이 어떤 인식을 가지고 있으며, 이들의 군입대, 부대에 대한 적응, 그리고 부정적 인식과 우려 등 을 살펴보았다. (연구방법) 설문조사 자료를 활용하여, 실증적으로 분석하였다. (연구결과) 주요 분석결과에서는 소속군대와 근무지역 등에 따라서 다양한 차이를 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 대부 분의 장병들은 다문화 병사 및 북한이탈주민 자녀 병사에 대해서 이들이 잘 적응하는지에 있어 ‘잘 모르겠다’, ‘무응답’이 70% 수준으로 매우 높게 나타났는데, 이는 다문화 병사들을 제대로 이해하지 못하는, 즉 낮은 수용 도를 보이는 것으로 해석된다. 또한, 다문화 병사 및 북한이탈주민 자녀 병사의 군입대에 대해서는 크게 반대하 지 않았으나, 육군, 해군, 공군에 비해서 해병대는 다소 보수적인 결과를 제시하고 있었다. 또한, 다문화 병사 및 북한이탈주민 자녀 병사에 대해서 차별과 부적응 등의 문제를 인식하는 것으로 나타났으나 이를 적극적으로 인 지하는 것은 아닌 것으로 판단된다. (결론 및 제언) 이러한 결과와 더불어 싱가포르와 미국의 사례에서 나타나는 시사점을 통해, 향후 우리 군대에서 나타날 수 있는 다문화 등 다양성의 심화에 대응하기 위해서 어떠한 측면이 교육적 이슈와 과제로 나타나는지를 제고할 수 있을 것이다.
