In many cases, Place name's origin of the village disappears when the name of the village is integrated and changed or deleted due to administrative reorganization. In recent years, it has been attracting attention again due to the necessity of local cultural research or local tourism information data. However, in the administrative district reorganization project carried out in the early modern period, there are cases in which Chinese character notation does not reflect the origin of the name or is mixed. This study investigated the Place name's origin and Chinese characters in Bunto Village distributed nationwide. The Chinese characters for “bunto” were used, meaning a junction (分土), a white fine soil (紛土), and a running rabbit (奔兎). The three types often did not match or were mixed with the contents of the place name's origin. In particular, in the case of ‘奔兎’, it is based on Feng Shui, where a rabbit looks at the moon, but there is no information about what it is running towards or why it is running. This is because the Place name's origin is not being accurately conveyed. In addition, there were cases in which place names that included motifs of the moon and rabbits other than “bunto” did not properly reflect the Place name's origin.

지명유래는 행정개편으로 마을의 이름이 통합되어 바뀌거나 삭제되는 과정에 서 함께 사라지게 되는 경우가 많았으나 최근에는 지역문화 조사나 지역의 관광정 보자료로서의 필요성에 의해 다시 주목받고 있다. 다만 근대 초기에 이루어진 행정구역개편 사업에서 한자표기가 지명유래를 반영하지 못하거나 혼용되는 등에 대한 예를 볼 수 있다. 본 연구는 전국적으로 분포한 ‘분토마을’의 지명유래와 한자표기를 조사하고 지형이 갈리는 분기점(分土), 하얀 고운 흙(紛土), 달리는 토끼(奔兎)를 의미하는 한자가 사용되고 있음을 확인하였다. 세 가지의 유형은 지명유래의 내용과 맞지 않거나 병기 혼용되는 경우가 다수 있었으며 특히 ‘奔兎’ 의 경우 ‘옥토망월’의 풍수에 기반을 두고 있으면서 무엇을 향해 달리는지 왜 달리는지에 대한 내용이 사라져 지명유래가 완전치 않은 내용으로 전해지고 있었다. 그리고 ‘분토’ 이외의 달과 토끼의 모티브를 포함하는 지명에서도 이상과 같은 지명유래를 반영하지 못하는 경우를 확인하였다.
