The history of the Republic of South Africa has been marked by racism, conflict and political violence. Much of the conflict and violence that dominated life was rooted in the brutal and oppressive system of colonialism and apartheid. The purpose of this study is to examine the role of religion in the establishment and spread of the apartheid system, the overcoming of apartheid, and the journey of peace and reconciliation. To this end, this paper first examined the role of religion in the process of conflict and peace establishment. Based on this, a framework was constructed to analyze the role of religion in the process of peace and reconciliation in the Republic of South Africa. Second, this thesis examined the reality of the apartheid system in the Republic of South Africa and the role of State theology-oriented religion as a follower and supporter under the system. Finally, this article examines the role of religion centered on Black Theology as a challenger to the apartheid system and a leader of peace and reconciliation. The role of religion for peace and reconciliation is examined in terms of the role of religion as a community, a set of teachings, spirituality, practice, and discourse.

남아공의 역사는 인종 차별과 갈등, 정치적 폭력으로 얼룩져 왔다. 삶을 지배했던 갈등과 폭 력의 대부분은 잔인하고 억압적인 식민주의와 아파르트헤이트 제도에 뿌리를 두고 있다. 이 글은 아파르트헤이트 체제의 구축과 확산, 그리고 아파르트헤이트 극복 및 평화와 화해의 여정에서 종교의 역할을 고찰하는데 연구 목적을 두었다. 이를 위해 이 논문은 분쟁과 평화구축 과정 에서 종교의 역할을 살펴보고 이를 토대로 남아공의 평화와 화해 과정에서 종교의 역할을 분석 하기 위한 틀을 구성하였다. 그리고 이를 토대로 남아공의 아파르트헤이트 체제의 실상과 그 체제하에서의 추종자이자 지지자로서 국가신학 지향의 종교의 역할과, 아파르트헤이트 체제에 대한 도전자이자 평화와 화해의 선도자로서 흑인신학 중심의 종교의 역할을 살펴보았다. 평화와 화해를 위한 종교의 역할은 공동체, 일련의 가르침, 영성, 관행, 담론으로서의 종교 역할 측면 에서 살펴보았다.
