This study aims to argue that German philosopher Carl Schmitt's political thought and Japanese director Shinkai Makoto's films, viewed from the perspective of the tragic decisions of sovereigns, contain political implications in the contemporary era of human crisis. To accomplish this, the study analyzes Shinkai Makoto's films, particularly his notable works, disaster trilogy, "Your Name," "Weathering with You," and "The Garden of Words," utilizing Schmitt's concepts of the state of exception and Katechon, to retrospectively ponder the contemporary significance of Schmitt's political thought. The common perception of global catastrophe permeates both the political concepts of Carl Schmitt emerging in the early to mid-20th century and the thematic concerns of the Japanese anime film director in the early 21st century. Schmitt justifies the sovereign's struggle to overcome the crisis of destruction through the image of the katechon (the withholding one), paradoxically preparing for the return of Christ despite being defeated by the Anti-Christ, accentuating the state of exception and the decision of the sovereign. In emphasizing the state of exception and the sovereign's decision, Shinkai Makoto can be considered as a Carl Schmitt returned in the form of animation. The ecological crisis of today has become a fundamental state of exception that threatens the lives of the entire human species. As a means to seek alternatives to overcome the state of exception, Schmitt's katechon theory has been revitalized through Shinkai Makoto's animations.

이 연구는 주권자의 비극적 결단이라는 관점에서 독일 정치학자 칼 슈미트의 정치사상과 일본의 영화감독 신카이 마코토의 작품들이 오늘날 인류 위기의 시대에 정치적 함의를 내포하고 있음을 주장하려 한다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 신카이 마코토의 영화, 특히 그의 대표작이라 할 수 있는 재난 3부작 <너의 이름은.>, <날씨의 아이> 그리고 <스즈메의 문단속>을 슈미트의 개념인 예외상태와 카테콘을 활용하여 분석하고, 이를 통해 슈미트의 정치사상이 지닌 현재적 의미를 고찰하려 한다. 20세기 초중반에 등장한 슈미트의 정치사 상 개념과 21세기 초반 일본 애니메이션 영화감독의 주제의식을 관통하는 것은 세계가 멸망해 간다는 위기의식이다. 슈미트는 적그리스도에 맞서다 패배함으로써 역설적으로 그리스도의 재림을 준비하는 카테콘(저항하는 자)의 형상을 통해 멸망의 위기를 극복하기 위한 주권자의 분투를 정당화한다. 예외상태와 주권자의 결단을 강조한다는 점에서 신카이 마코토는 애니메이션으로 돌아온 칼 슈미트라 할 수 있다. 오늘날 생태위기는 인간 종 전체의 삶을 위협하는 근원적 예외상태가 되고 있다. 지구적 예외상태를 극복할 대안 모색의 한 방편으로서 슈미트의 카테콘 사상이 신카이 마코토의 애니메이션으로 부활한 것이다.
