This paper examines how changes in social acceptance and perception of 'homosexuality' are reflected in modern and contemporary Japanese literature in the early 20th century, after sexology. In particular, I would like to examine the Japanese society's response to the sexual minorities of that era, targeting literature works dealing with male homosexuality. This paper focuses on “homosexuality” on the dominant norms of heterosexuality, but examines how “metamosexual desire discourse” was created and distributed along with the “sexual desire boom” of the 1920s and analyzed the novels of Edogawa Ranpo, which led the “hentai-seiyoku literature” in the 1920s and 30s. The main interest of the study is in the interpretation of Edogawa Ranpo's work, but the magazine “hentai-seiyoku” (1922–1925) was also subject to review in order to understand the social and cultural context of the 1920s. In this study, Ranpo's novel “Devil on a Lone Island,” which has not been fully elucidated so far, was analyzed by referring to the discourses of Karl Heinrich Ulihees, Hablock Ellis, and John Adton Simmons, focusing on the hentai-seiyoku that was popular in the 1920s.

이 논문에서는 20세기 초, 성과학의 수용에서 비롯된 ‘동성애/이성애’의 공고한 이원론적 구분 이후, 일본 근현대문학에서는 ‘동성애’의 사회적 수용과 인식의 변 화가 어떻게 반영되고 있는지를 고찰한다. 특히 남성 동성애를 다룬 문학 작품을 분석 대상으로 하여, 그 시대의 성적 마이너리티에 대한 일본 사회의 대응을 살펴 보고자 한다. 본 논문에서는 지배적인 이성애 규범에 대한 ‘동성애’에 초점을 맞추 되, 1920년대의 ‘성욕학붐’과 더불어 ‘변태성욕담론’이 어떻게 생성되고 유통되었 는지를 살피고 1920–30년대 ‘변태성욕문학’을 주도한 에도가와 란포(江戸川乱歩) 의 장편소설을 분석하였다. 연구의 주된 관심은 에도가와 란포 작품의 해석에 있 지만, 1920년대의 사회적・문화사적 맥락을 이해하기 위해 잡지 『변태성욕変態性慾』(1922–1925)도 검토의 대상으로 했다. 본 연구에서는 1920년대 유행한 성욕학에 주목하면서 란포의 장편소설 『외딴섬 악마』를 카를 하인리히 울리히스, 해블록 엘리스, 존 애딩턴 시먼즈의 담론을 참고로 하여 분석하였다.
