The purpose of this study is to examine Park In-ho’s leadership succession process as one of the organizational institutionalization processes of Donghak and Cheondogyo, and to confirm that this process allowed the reconstruction of Donghak and Cheondogyo and various activities of Cheondogyo afterward. The contents of this study revealed that the process of changing from Donghak to Cheondogyo was a process of institutionalizing religion, and during this period, Park In-ho’s activities were confirmed to be in the stage of education and training of successors and mutual cooperation with previous leaders. Since then, it has been confirmed that the educational movement, cultural movement, and independence movement of Cheondogyo have been possible because they have achieved the institutionalization of religion, and the role of Park In-ho, who directed it, was important. During this period, it was confirmed that Park In-ho’s activities were in the stage of mutual cooperation and leadership transfer during the leadership succession process. It was after Son Byeong-hee’s death that the leader’s relocation concluded, and Park In-ho continued to direct various activities, protect the organization, and unite the church members as the leader of Cheondogyo. The results of this study revealed that Park In-ho’s succession to the leader of Cheondogyo was also an important period in the Cheondogyo organization, and his role and activities in the process were based on various activities, including the independence movement. Although Park In-ho is not a charismatic leader like Choi Je-woo, Choi Si-hyung, and Son Byung-hee, he can be defined as a person who has completed the institutionalization of religion, routinisation of charisma and demonstrated leadership based on rationality according to the system.

이 연구의 목적은 동학·천도교의 조직 제도화 과정의 하나로 박인호의 지도자 승계 과정을 살펴보고, 이 과정이 있어 동학·천도교의 재건이 가능했으며 이후 천도교의 여러 활동 또한 가능했음을 확인하는 것이다. 이 연구의 내용은 동학에서 천도교로 현도하는 과정은 종교의 제도화 과정임을 밝혀냈고, 이 기간 동안 박인호의 활동은 후계자 교육 및 훈련과 이전 지도자와 상호협력 단계임을 확인했다. 이후 천도교의 교육운동, 문화운동, 독립운동은 종교의 제도화를 달성했기 때문에 가능했던 활동이고, 이를 지휘했던 박인호의 역할이 중요했음을 확인했다. 이 기간 동안 박인호의 활동은 지도자 승계 과정 속에서 상호협력 단계와 함께 지도력 이전 단계였음을 확인했다. 지도자 이전이 마무리 지은 것은 손병희가 죽은 다음이었고, 박인호는 그 이후에도 천도교의 교주로서 다양한 활동을 지시하고, 조직을 보호하며 교인들을 응집하는 데 노력했다. 이 연구의 결과는 박인호의 지도자 승계 과정은 천도교 조직에서도 중요한 시기였고, 그 과정 속에서 그의 역할과 활동은 이후 천도교가 독립운동을 포함한 다양한 활동을 하는 데 밑바탕이었음을 밝힌 것이다. 비록 박인호가 최제우, 최시형, 손병희와 같은 카리스마 있는 지도자는 아닐지언정 그들의 카리스마를 일상화한, 즉 종교의 제도화를 완성하고, 제도에 따른 합리성에 기반한 지도력을 십분 발휘한 인물로 정의할 수 있다.
