This paper analyzes scientific articles published by students studying in Japan during the transition period of the modern era at Taegeukhakbo to trace the efforts of international students, who were at the forefront of knowledge reception, to recognize science as a new Western knowledge system and a new civilizing force, and to transplant it into Korean society. As the goal of Taegeukhakbo was clearly stated by its publishers to "educate the people" and "develop knowledge," the emphasis was on writing essays and articles to convey and educate readers about the Western knowledge system. The international student writers, who had the responsibility of being both students learning and mastering Western disciplines and teachers transmitting them to the precarious Korean Empire, were able to go beyond the limits of being non-professionals and use the Taegeukhakbo space for scientific articles as an experimental space to learn scientific knowledge together, test and process it in various ways, and create "people's knowledge." The scientific articles were organized in the form of formalized lectures according to their importance, rather than simply listing new and novel knowledge in the beginning, and teaching materials for ordinary school teachers were actively developed. Biographies of scientists, especially those written in the form of stories told to children, presented a new human figure: the scientist or inventor.

이 논문은 근대전환기 재일본 유학생들이 간행한 『태극학보』에 실린 과학기사들을 분석해, 지식 수용의 최전선에 있던 유학생들이 서양 의 새로운 지식체계이자 새로운 문명의 힘으로서 과학을 인지하고, 한국 사회에 이식하고자 벌인 노력의 양상들을 추적한다. 『태극학보』는 발간사에서부터 “국민교육”과 “지식 개발”이라는 목표를 명확히 제시했던 만큼, 독자들에게 서양 지식체계를 전달하고 교육하기 위한 논설, 기사를 작성하는 데 중점을 두었다. 서양 학문을 배우고 익히는 학생인 동시에 이를 위태로운 대한제국에 전달할 교사라는 책임을 진 유학생 필자들은 비전문가라는 한계에 갇히지 않고, 『태극학보』에 허용된 과학기사 지면을 실험공간으로 삼아 과학지식을 함께 학습하고, 다양한 방식으로 시험·가공해 “국민의 지식”을 창출할 수 있었다. 과학기사들은 초기 새롭고 신기한 지식을 단순히 나열한 데서 벗어나 차츰 중요도에 따라 각 분야를 개론한 강담의 형태로 정식화되었고, 보통학교 교사들을 위한 교안들도 적극적으로 개발됐다. 특히 어린이 들에게 들려주는 이야기 형태의 서술된 과학자들의 전기는 유용한 도 구 발명가라는 새로운 인간형을 제시했다.
