The issue of war orphans emerged as the biggest social problem during the Korean War. After the Armistice Agreement in 1953, organizations and institutions that entered the orphan business included the American evangelical organization World Vision, the Christian Children’s Fund (CCF), and the Holt Adoption Program. These organizations, headquartered in the United States, were interconnected and active through an international network, and those who served as a bridge between them were the U.S. military and missionaries who cared for war orphans in Korea. In particular, the American missionaries was those who practiced religious evangelicalism. Their personal dedication and sacrifice were truly enormous. However, in the international environment of the Cold War, they had no choice but to be caught in the environment of the times, playing an intermediate role for the ROK-US alliance. Due to the activities of American missionaries in Korea, an international network was formed for Korean Christianity, including in the United States, centered on Han Kyung-jik, who can be considered the leader of South Korean Protestantism.

한국전쟁을 겪으면서 가장 큰 사회문제로 대두한 것이 전쟁고아 문제였다. 1953년 휴전협정 이후 고아 사업에 뛰어든 단체와 기관들 은 미국의 복음주의 단체인 월드비전(World Vision), 기독교아동복 리회(Christian Children’s Fund: CCF), 홀트입양 프로그램 등이 었다. 미국의 본부를 두고 있는 이들 기관들은 국제적인 네트워크를 통해 상호 연결되어 활동했고, 이 중간다리 역할을 했던 이들이 한국 에서 전쟁고아를 보살폈던 미군과 선교사들의 활동이었다. 특별히 미 국선교사들은 종교적 복음주의를 실천한 이들이었다. 그들의 개인적 인 헌신과 희생은 참으로 지대했다. 하지만 냉전이라는 국제환경 속에 서 한미동맹을 위한 중간역할이라는 시대적 환경에 끼어 있는 존재들일 수 밖에 없었다. 미국선교사들의 한국에서의 활동으로 인해 남한 개신교의 거두라 할 수 있는 한경직을 중심으로 한국의 기독교가 미국 을 비롯하여 국제적인 네트워크를 형성할 수 있었다.
