This paper explores Han Deok-se’s historical activities in central California. Han, born into a noble family in Jeonbuk, migrated to the US with her husband after graduating from Ehwa Haktang and settled there. Han orchestrated a strategic collaboration involving her husband, Kim Hyung-soon, and her mentor, Kim Ho, resulting in the establishment and operation of Brother Kim’s Company and Reedley Nursery within a tripartite management structure. Her multifaceted responsibilities encompassed oversight and accounting of these entities. Furthermore, Han embarked on a distinct path of self-identification as a devoted adherent of Christianity, with a pronounced emphasis on spearheading the establishment and expansion of Korean churches within the environs of Reedley and Dinuba. Primarily acclaimed for her resolute advocacy of Reedley Group’s endeavors for independent Korea, she notably embraced the doctrine of Korea’s neutralization and unification. As a prominent figure within the National Association and the Korean Women’s Patriotic Corps, her efforts encompassed a diverse array of undertakings, ranging from championing homeland independence to rendering assistance to the afflicted and fostering the growth of the Korean community. This comprehensive inquiry, which systematically delineates her undertakings spanning the realms of economy, religion, and politics, serves to proffer exemplary instances of women hailing from Jeonbuk contributing significantly to the annals of the diasporic Koreans’ independence movement, alongside the broader economic and cultural tapestry of Korean Americans. Additionally, the presence of Kim Yong-joong and Song Cheol, fellow natives of Jeonbuk who ascended to prominence as accomplished entrepreneurs in California, underscores the contributions made by Jeonbuk provincials to the contemporary Korean societal landscape and local economic milieu in central California.

본 논문은 전북 출신 양반 자제로 태어나 이화학당 졸업 후 남편을 따라 미국으 로 이주한 한덕세의 이주 후 정착지인 캘리포니아 중부(‘중가주’로 약칭)에서의 활 동사를 고찰한다. 한덕세는 남편 김형순과 스승 김호를 연결하여 3인 체제의 공동 경영으로 김형제상회와 리들리건재회사를 운영하였다. 초기 자금을 지원하고 인맥 에 따른 친분을 토대로 고객을 확보하였으며 사업이 자리를 잡은 후에는 회계를 담당하였다. 또한 리들리, 다이뉴바를 중심으로 한인교회 설립과 확장에 힘쓰며 기 독교인으로서 정체성을 확립해 나갔다. 무엇보다 그녀는 리들리 그룹 독립운동가 로서 한국 중립화 통일론을 옹호하며 국민회와 대한여자애국단 주요 회원으로서 고국 독립과 한반도 안팎의 자연재해 피해민 구제, 한인사회 발전을 위해 다양한 활동을 펼쳤다. 한덕세의 경제, 종교, 독립운동 활동을 밝힌 본 연구는 전북 출신 여성이 디아스포라 독립운동사와 미주 한인 경제‧문화사에 이바지한 실례를 제공 한다. 더불어 같은 전북 출신으로 캘리포니아 내 사업가로 크게 성공한 김용중, 송철 등의 존재를 함께 밝혀 당시 한인사회와 지역 경제에 전북 출신자의 기여가 상당했음을 논증한다.
