Purpose : This paper is to analyze the export competitiveness of the Korean weapons and ammunition industry in the global market and draw implications for the development of the industry, of which the importance is greatly highlighted especially due to the occurrence of Russia-Ukraine war in February 2022. Research design, data, methodology : Six item groups(HS 9301-9306) based on six units of HS Code 93 classification covering weapons, bullets, and their parts and accessories were analyzed using UN Comtrade's trade statistics data for 10 years from 2012 to 2021, using the global market share (IMS), trade specialization index (TSI), and current comparative advantage index (RCA). Results : The U.S., Italy, and South Korea increased significantly their exports in the global arms and ammunition market. Korea's export growth rates increased in the three item groups, but fell in the three item groups. Also, the four item groups were in the export specialization area, while the two item groups were in the import specialization area or the very weak proportion of exports. The three item groups have comparative advantage and comparative inferiority, respectively. Conclusions : Korea has become a major exporter in the global arms and ammunition market, especially focusing on major ammunition items. It is quite necessary to strengthen efforts to improve export competitiveness and increase global market share through continuous performance improvement, thorough quality management, stable production, and active overseas marketing.

본 논문은 2022년 2월 발발한 러시아-우크라이나 전쟁 과정에서 무기 및 총포탄 산업의 중요 성이 크게 부각된 가운데 세계시장에서 한국 무기 및 총포탄 산업의 수출경쟁력 현황을 분석 하고, 해당 산업의 발전을 위한 시사점을 도출하는데 연구의 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 무기·총포탄 및 그 부분품과 부속품을 포괄하는 관세통관 품목분류(HS코드) 93류의 6단위 기준 6개 품목군(HS 9301~9306)을 대상으로 2012년부터 2021년까지 10년 기간 동안의 UN Corntrade의 무역통계 데이터를 이용하여 세계시장점유율(IMS), 무역특화지수(TSI), 현시 비교우위지수(RCA) 분석을 하였다. 분석 대상기간 동안 세계 무기 및 총포탄 분야에서 미국, 이탈리아, 한국의 수출증가율이 두드 러진 가운데, 한국은 3개 품목군의 수출 규모가 늘어났으나, 3개 품목군은 성장세가 둔화된 것으로 나타났다. 또한 4개 품목군은 수출특화영역인 반면 2개 품목군은 수입특화영역에 있거나 수출비중이 매 우 미약한 것으로 나타났으며, 3개 품목군은 비교우위인 반면 3개 품목군은 비교열위로 각각 나타났다. 이러한 분석 결과를 종합하면, 한국은 특히 총포탄 주요 품목을 중심으로 세계 무기 및 총포탄 시장에서 주요 수출국으로 자리 잡은 것으로 보인다. 향후에도 수출경쟁력 향상 및 세계시장 점유율 제고를 위해서는 지속적인 성능개량, 철저한 품질관리, 안정적인 생산, 해외 마케팅 강 화 등의 노력이 필요하다.
